I want to buy a few nice figures (28mm or 30mm, heroic scale no problem) for my brother's birthday. He's into Fantasy, and while he does play wargames, he's more of a painter. He especially likes everything undead (no modern Zombies please) and pirates, and was a big fan of the style of the(metal)Confrontation figures. The Black Scorpion undead pirate shown yesterday on TMP would have been perfect, other than the fact it's not yet available
I know he would like to get his hands on a headless Horseman, too. I used to be in fantasy, once, but I haven't painted anything else than Napoleonics for the last 5 years now, so I don't know the cool fantasy companies anymore. No GW, though, there's a store close to his place and I want to surprise him with something he never saw. Suggestions? |

There is lots of great stuff out there. Here are my new favorite fantasy figs: otherworld.me.uk/store.html I really like the Pig-face Orks and Hobgoblins. |

Old Glory has a set of Undead Pirates. and they have a headless Horseman figure in the Vampire Gothic range, Eureka also has Skeletal Pirates. Neither of these are in the same style as the Confrontation figures. Reaper is a good place to look. Their website has a search function, that is actually pretty useful. I know they have a few Undead Pirates and the quality, from a painters standpoint, is very high. I just crawled out of bed, so I haven't the caffeine in me yet to supply links. If you have any trouble finding the above sites I'll see what I can dredge up later. |

Also some undead fantasy he may not be aware of can be found here: link The Skeleton War Mammoth with Catapult and Skeleton War Rhino with Bolt thrower are classic undead figures. |

For undead pirates, you've got two really good choices in Reaper and Privateer Press. Reaper's Razig's Revenge: link I especially recommend the Dark Maiden, an animated ship's figurehead, and Razig himself. Privateer's Revenant Pirate Crew: link link Not a shot at Old Glory or any other companies, but for someone who's primarily a painter Reaper and Privateer have high quality minis that are not just troop filler. The Black Scorpion pirates will be the same quality as Reaper or Privateer when they come out. |

If he likes putting stuff together as well as painting I think you would be hard pressed to beat some of the Privateer Press Hordes stuff. Some of the titans are just awesome. If you are looking for something less monstrous and maybe a little more historical oriented there is also Crocodile Games, who, after GW, produces the best fantasy figures out there I think. Their recent spartan and wendigo releases are pretty cool but they also have a pile of different mummies of various sorts so if he likes undead, that would be the way to go. The crypt lords are some of the best undead figs on the market. link |

I would second or third Reaper. I love their sculpts and the high level of detail make them fun to paint. I buy them for games but I also buy them just to paint them. |

And the cool thing with Privateer Press is (I think) Brookhurst has a 50 percent off sale right now. |

He especially likes everything undead (no modern Zombies please) and pirates, and was a big fan of the style of the(metal)Confrontation figures Just for something different: I'd say a Wyrd, Hell Dorado, Alkemy or Spinespur box set might fit the bill- linklinklinklinkI don't know the cool fantasy companies anymore. Those above are "cutting edge" for coolness factor- |
