OK, I have a bunch, and am looking for any that are fraught with period flavor and information, as in Forlorn Hope. While I do not actually like FH enough to play them, I love the information and details in there enough to own them, for instance.

I am especially interested in the regimental scaled rules, but would consider larger and smaller scale rules if they are filled with interesting period details and worth investigating.

So I have:

Forlorn Hope
File Leader
Wargamers Guide to the ECW
Regiment of Foote
Ironsides
Spanish Fury

What others should I check out?

For God, King and Country by the Canadian Wargamers. Victory without Quarter is also good.

Thanks,

John

Get a copy of Warhammer English Civil War. More period flavor than you can shake a stick at. :)

The book is worth buying even if you never try the rules.

Warhammer ECW gets my vote too.

You could look at 'For PARLIAMENT, KING or GLORY' a work in progress set on the pkg yahoo group.

His ACW and NAP rules also free on their own Yahoo groups are very good.

Another vote for Warhammer ECW!

Regiment of Foote.
Easily my fave.

I also liked the information and flavor of "Forlorn Hope" but didn't care for the mechanics of the system.

I've played Clarence Harrison's "Victory Without Quarter" and we certainly enjoyed it . . . and we might return to it but it wasn't quite what I wanted. Still the price is right, he'll send you a .pdf file of it for free:

The Perfect Captain's "Very Civile Actions" (along with it's "Tinker Fox" campaign) is also free . . . but it works on more of a company level. However Angus Konstam uses it in a "big battalion" sort of format (and has written an extensive review published in BATTLEGAMES MAGAZINE #3). His site has nice photos and all of the links you need:

"Regiment of Foote", a 15mm rule set from Peter Pig, looks interesting. It has a pre-battle campaign segment that can alter the armies you start with before you get to the table top. I haven't finished reading it though, so I don't know if I'll like its mechanics.

I like Warhammer ECW too. The one thing I change about the game is that if pursuit caries a unit off the table it takes a leadership check and if it fails it is gone.

Also look at the fantasy game Warmaster. It works really well for ECW. I've modified a few things on my website to give it more period feel. I really enjoy it and it is a fun game. It is also free, which is a nice bonus.

Try "Down Styphon". Published in the '70s, but still available from someone somewhere on the Net. Can be used for large skirmishes to small battles.

Basic Impetus Baroque expansion – available free on the net from dadiepiombo.com Its essentially an elegant ancient set of rules but reworked specifically for ECW.

Jeff I agree with you about Forlorn Hope, and moved to Regiment of Foote and never looked back. The campaign system works to determine who is the attacker and defender and make sure the armies are not the same size however it still means that the game is balanced as the attacker needs to beat the defender whereas the defender needs to hold his position.

Rich.

MoA for ECW. Made the changes to make it work. Put all the rest on the shelf. Made the right choice!

Another Warhammer ECW vote here. I own FH and WECW and think WECW trumps FH for fun and flavor.

Dremel Man03 Sep 2009 10:54 a.m. PST

Warhammer ECW for me too please.

For a decent write up on Regimente of Foote wander over to Kev's site….

Regimente of Foote is a very atmospheric system, and the campaign system for determining which player is the attacker and which the defender is great for ensuring that no two games are the same (even if you start the games with the same army list). It's ideal for a quick, fun game that can be completed in one evening.
