Extra Crispy had an excellent thread going with respect to what Joe Johnson might or might not have been able to do On this line, I just read the book "1864" by James Cupelli, in which Lee moves South and replaces Johnson rather than Hood (well, not quite that simple, but you get the gist) – anyone had a chance to read it? Quite a good read – I would be interested in what my fellow TMPers think of the book |

What happened on the northern Virginia front along the Rapahanock while Lee was in Atlanta? |

Great question, Fritz – Longstreet was in command – when I mentioned it's not that simple, the Confederates went to great lengths to hide the fact that Lee was not in Virginia (feeling unwell, etc.) and Lee and Longstreet agreed upon how to defend the ANV against the Army of the Potomac – so, things in Virginia don't change much from our time line until Lee starts to raise ye holy hell in Tennessee |

Someone did a LEE AT CHATTANOOGA novel, in which Lee goes to Tennessee after Chickamauga -- but Davis will not relieve Bragg, who still has Army of tenn. But Lee commands Longstreet, and I think Forrest places himself under Lee. Don't recall how it comes out. Interesting idea, but I don't recall it was as good a read as Gingrich's GETTYSBURG trilogy. |
