Hi guys, I'm currently painting an early Achaemenid Persian Army (the Essex minis prepacked DBA set) and am looking for a Lydian army to oppose them. Does anyone have any suggestions for some decent minis? I know that Museum minis have a Lydian DBA army but have not seen any pictures of them… Does anyone know how they match up to Essex minis size wise?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys,
Ace

Chariot Miniatures (now Magister Militum) did a Lydian army, but they're more slender figures than Essex:

Kyote is right. Falcon UK/Quartermaster USA does make two styles of mounted Lydian Heavy and Extra heavy cavalry. The other casting was a foot spearmen in Greek style armour.

Chariot castings were nice. Old Glory has irregular bareheaded infantry in their SS range but no specific cavalry.

Here is one brief discussion of what you ask:

I've been building up my DBA Lydian Army to a Field of Glory Lydian Army. Generally, a reasonable but boring starting point for Field of Glory seems to be take your DBA army, and multiply all the stands by four.

However, with the Lydians, you can take three or four different DBA armies, and combine them together as a Lydian FOG army, which is nice if you also want to play DBA. Thracians, Asiatic Greeks, Phrygians are all useful DBA armies that can serve in your FOG Lydian army.

Similarly, if you're just building a Lydian DBA army, but want it to look spectacularly diverse, you can bring in any of these for specific elements. The only quintessentially "Lydian" unit is going to be the cavalry. The Chariot cavalry is good. I'd avoid the rest, even the hoplites which are very similar, in favor of whatever other hoplites in bell cuirass you can dig up.

I've used a lot of Mirliton Etruscans, Old Glory Hoplites, and Xyston Thracians and Paphlagonians. Scratch building some chariots is on my list of things I am occasionally enthusiastic about.

Thanks guys!

I ordered the Chariot Miniatures Lydian army from Magister Militum. Can't wait to get them, hurry up Royal Mail!

Once again, thanks for all the advice and info!

Cheers,

Ace
