Anyone know if the US M 6 heavy artillery tractor was used by US force in Europe during the war? I know work started on it in 43' and that it look like a M 4 tractor on steriords, but that is all the info I found on it. Hope someone out there has more. I was kind of surprised that the book "US & British tanks of WW 2" did not have any info on it and their artilley tractor info stoped at the M 5. |

According to Doyle's "Standard Catalog of US Military Vehicles" (page 409), 1235 were built by August 1945 with construction starting in February 1944. It would've only been used for the 4.7-inch, 240mm or 8-inch field pieces. He doesn't say that it was ever deployed, however, I have a picture of one in British service towing a 240mm howitzer barrel on its M2 Cannon Transport Wagon and another, American, M6 backing the barrel into place on the carriage. In this case, the gun and carriage are transported on a T17E1 carrier which used Sherman running gear. Allied-Axis Magazine #14 2004. Wyatt |
