Thinking about getting into Civil War period Roman naval gaming. I know virtually nothing about the miniatures or rules so I'm all ears. What scale, maker, and rules would someone recommend for this period for someone who is brand new, looking for simple rules to game large battles? 25/28mm are probably out of the question cost wise but I'll take all other suggestions for ships. Cheers. |

Hey E.C. I just came across Roman Seas minutes after making this post. Looks like a good choice. Obviously I have to overcome my fear of building "paper" ships. Glad to hear any reviews of it and any good rule sets out there. |

I have the Roman seas ships. They are easy to build and they look great. You can paint up 6mm figures and place them on the ships. They are strong enough to hold them. You build the ships out of card stock |

The ROMAN SEAS stuff is excellent and good value. |

Alternatively, if you want colourful and cheap you could try these

I for one am lousy at putting paper ships together. For myself i'll stick with the 1/1200th scale miniatures that Navwar and Langton makes,at least this way it's a slight building process and then painting the ship this i don't mind. Captain Gideon |

I put a fair number of the Roman Seas ships together. They look really good. But I did get really sick of putting them together, after the 10th ship, or so, and found myself wishing that I had bought some 1/1200 Langton ships, instead. It isn't a knock on the product – for paper models, they are fine. I just discovered that I wasn't a paper model kind of guy. |

If you want inexpensive and very small galleys you can buy these from Outpost Wargame figures. link |

I decided to get into Roman naval specicifally because of Eric's paper ships – a friend brought some to one of our gaming nights a few years ago and I thought they looked great. A few years later I took the plunge and bought some of the kits. You can see the chronicle of my Roman ship efforts on my blog ( link ). For Historicon this year I used Eric's soon to be released Roman Seas rules (which he has written to accompany his ships, so the level of detail matches to the use of the bigger ship models nicely). That game went very nicely and was loads of fun. I'm currently building ships from Eric's Merchant set, as well as more ships of the sizes common in the late Republican era to do some convoy raid games, typical of the actions of Sextus Pompey against Caesar's supply lines. I personally really like the Roman Seas ships and think they produce a great looking game. For me, putting ships together is no different than painting ships and definietly less work (and a whole lot less cost) than would be required to use other similarly sized ship models. Brian |

Xyston produce a nice range of 1/600 galleys, which is the best scale I think, for this type of naval game. link |

Good stuff all! Thank you. I don't see myself putting together the paper ships, as nice as they look! I think it will be 1/1200 metal for me! Cheers again! |

Uesugi Kenshin
you started from asking about 25/28mm scale models to going with 1/1200th scale
LOL |

Now I said those were "probably" out of the question! I was considering 15mm til I saw the price per ship, and that sent me straight to the 1/600 and smaller scales! ;-) |

I would actually love to do Korean vrs Japanese (1592-98) naval gaming in 15mm but I dont have enough floor space in my house! |
