Considering a joining the Old Glory Army and collecting a new period. Wanted to get opinions on which ranges are some of their best sculpted and easy to paint.

raylev328 Aug 2009 2:30 p.m. PST

I have their Northwest Frontier figures (Pathans and British/Indian), American Civil War, Dark Age Saxons/Vikings, Republican Romans, and Napoleonics. I'm very happy with all of them and they all paint up well….no complaints.

I also have some of their ACW and Napoleonic 2d edition. They're a bit smaller than the first edition, and aren't as "active," but they have better human proportions.

The Pancho Villa line is good. I tend to like most of what Old Glory produces.

Thanks,

John

What range? Gangster buildings! Oh, and pirate ships! Oh, and western buildings!

Of the ranges I've seen, the ECW and Sikh Wars figures are probably the best quality. Their Vikings, Hundred Years War, and Marlborough's Wars figures are also very, very good.

Many of the ancients ranges are nice too. If you're looking for a new period from scratch, with lots of interesting troops, may I suggest the Second Punic War?

GreatScot7228 Aug 2009 3:04 p.m. PST

Dark Ages, Crusades, HYW,Pirates, and British Colonial for me.

Crow Bait28 Aug 2009 3:15 p.m. PST

The Boxer Rebellion range looks good, and paints up great.

DeanMoto28 Aug 2009 3:19 p.m. PST

HYW, WotR, Feudal/Crusades, Eastern Ren., Hungarian/Hussites – I'd say most of their early-Medieval to Rennaissance ranges (Revenge line?) are good.

The Malborough range looks good too; as well as the Napoleonics – at least they look good enough on the site & you would get battalions on the cheap (with the card).

The Trojan War range figures don't look that good, but the chariots from the range are fine – horses a bit on the small side though.

Their Normans & Vikings look okay, but I got the Crusader line for these, since they're also 40% off with the membership. I did get the dragon ship though – gotta have at least one of these, right?

I've yet to paint up some Japanese from the Boxer Rising range – they look a little chunky, but should be fine painted up.

Most of their artillery pieces look really good – maybe a bit small next to larger makes.

Most look pretty good once painted up – except for some of those Trojan War guys – man they have some misshapen shoulders & heads.

You can pretty much tell from the images on the "other" OG site link

I like their Indian Mutiny, Vikings, Welsh, Pathans, and Foreign Legion lines. I also like their pirates: lots of decent fighting pirates, plus all sorts of additional things like civilians, cannibals, vile governor with toadies, prisoners, and the ships. Not quite as well sculpted as some companies but there is something to be said for the extensiveness of the line (quantity has a quality all its own?). Besides, my very favorite pirate is one of theirs.

Their 2nd Generation ACW line. Just outstanding.

Sysiphus28 Aug 2009 3:59 p.m. PST

Sikh Wars and Mutiny figures are very nicely done. NW Frontier is good. Biblical chariots are a good value as well. Waiting for 2nd generation, painted SYW grin

I mix the renaissance line with Foundry in the same unit and can't tell the difference.

Fifty428 Aug 2009 4:09 p.m. PST

The Crusader figures they sell are really good. I have always been partial to Mark Sims work!

Broadsword28 Aug 2009 4:37 p.m. PST

Old Glory Army Card will get you discounts on Old Glory as well as the Crusader, Superfigs, and Blue Moon miniatures they sell.

avidgamer28 Aug 2009 4:49 p.m. PST

2nd Generation ACW line!!!!!!! The BEST!!!!

vojvoda28 Aug 2009 5:27 p.m. PST

For me I have Roman Republic, Roman Allies, Celts, Punic lines, Late Repubic and Celt Casualties, Trojans, 2nd Generation ACW in 25s. All are good IMHO. All the Crusader line is covered by the Army as well. Also do not forget the Ship yard. I am going for the Pirates and Turtle boat at Fall In!. You did not say anything about the other scales but the 10mm stuff is nice as well.

The special sets they did for the Army (Cowboys and Pirates) I do not have the regular pirates but from the website they look like they are nice sculpts as well. VR

The landsknechts and many others from the Italian Wars range are good.

Militia Pete28 Aug 2009 7:35 p.m. PST

I am a fan of Old Glory. Cost wise you can't go wrong and I have never had any compalints with their ranges (Greeks, Vikings, Normans, WOTR, F&I, AWI, Wayne's Legion to name a few). Best bang for the buck and also add in Crusader? Please, well worth it.

The AWI range is pretty good.

I quite liked their Jacobite Wars stuff

It is SO refreshing to see positive comments about Old Glory. I am SO sick of knee jerk negative reactive comments anytime OG is mentioned. I LOVE OG; in fact the bulk of my painted (and definitely the box after box of as yet unpainted stuff) is OG. I absolutely love the animation and variety. I look at other manufacturers and the stiff and repetitive poses bore me. I find that OG has a better feel for hand/head size, and weapon size. I have yet to see a punkin headed, mitten handed figure wielding a 2x12 for a sabre in any OG range. Favorite ranges? ECW, WoR, War of 1812, AWI. I can't say that there any ranges that I don't like – and I have Napoleonics, ACW, colonials, ancients. I'm an OG junky.

StarfuryXL528 Aug 2009 8:36 p.m. PST

I started the French and Indian War

Shhh! Not so loud -- they'll be looking for you.

doc mcb28 Aug 2009 8:36 p.m. PST

I have 1000's of OG, and were I starting over, I'd still buy them first and most. I have Trojan War (unpainted), Punic War (painted), F&I (mostly painted), AWI (mostly painted -- and the 2nd edition are excellent), Alamo (supplemented by Cannon Fodder and many other lines, but still 90% of my very large collection is OG); Seminole War (unpainted); ACW (including a lot of pre-painted 2nd edition, excellent, a great value for the cost); Old West; and probably something else.

raylev328 Aug 2009 11:00 p.m. PST

As you can see there's a lot of people happy with OG figures. Another consideration is that at 40 percent off with the army deal, it makes it very inexpensive to try out new eras.

Supercilius Maximus29 Aug 2009 2:54 a.m. PST

<<I started the French and Indian War.>>

Yeah, right. You're just saying that to give GW plausible deniability, aren't you?

I'm waiting for the AWI 2nd Edition to become available in the UK. I disagree with DAF in that I found the AWI 1st Edition a rather poor range, especially the awful fits of the cavalry (a whole bag of 17th LD and not one decent match) and the militia heads look a bit weird, but possibly there are other packs in the range that are much better than the ones I've seen.

In general, I was put off OG by their UK representatives at a Salute a few years ago; when I questioned the "mix" in their bags (overloaded with commmand for those of us not into 12-figure units), I was told to just throw away what I didn't want. That said, friends' collections of 16th Century and Victorian Colonial stuff look good, especially the Mutiny.

Dave Crowell29 Aug 2009 5:17 a.m. PST

I absolutely love their Dark Ages figures. I have about 30-40 pounds (weight)of the, and like so many I too had to get one of the Viking Ships.

OK, some of the poses are a bit odd, but othing that ca't be fixed with snip, pin and bend.

The Drk Ages mix very well with Foundr, and cost a whole lot less.

Even before the OG Army, they were my go to company for 25mm. I also have lots of the 15mm Command Decison vehicles. Nice little kits, and you can actually afford to field companies not just platoons.

I keep being tempted by WW1 and WSS figures from them. I like the OG style, animated and easy to pant.

My pick O.G. ancients ranges and I do have alot and painted! Mike Adams Also Crusader !

Adam from Lancashire29 Aug 2009 6:32 a.m. PST

Saw this unit on the OG UK website in the flesh at Triples. It looked really good along with the rest of the Italian Wars line. I just wish we had OG Army in the UK.

I always liked their Gallic range, lots of animation in the figures…the bonus of the price being that one bag of foot figures can just about do 2-3 bases for Impetus

JamesonFirefox29 Aug 2009 7:11 a.m. PST

I've been quite pleased my OG NW Frontier Anglo-Indian army, Pathans, boers, Wars of the Roses, Swiss, Crusades/Feudal era, Saxons, 15mm Command Decision WW2 and I've had a close look at and been impressed by a friend's War of 1812 Americans. Not as impressed by their late Imperial Romans or Early Imperial Romans though.

DeanMoto29 Aug 2009 10:34 a.m. PST

Oh, and their WWI French (Modern/No Man's Land range) are good too; the 37mm trench gun set is very nice.

skinkmasterreturns29 Aug 2009 12:20 p.m. PST

I still like the old Dave Alsop ACW even though I dont own any. Many moons ago,in the early 90's, I remember some fun games with them as a friend had quite a few in his collection. Of the ones that I own,I have to agree that the ECW is a very good range, and the bulk of my forces are made up of those. I have known several people that have had the OG army card and its a great value. The only reason I dont have one myself is that I'm not primarily a 25mm gamer anymore. I dont have enough space for the size of the armies that I like, but if I did….

Daylami29 Aug 2009 12:33 p.m. PST

Lets see

Ancients
Ceasarian Roman, Celtic, Carthaginian, Greek, early imperial Roman, late Imperial Roman, Germans, Sarmatians, Sassannian Persian, Early Byzantine, Norman, Saracen, Crusader, Mongol, Turks. I recommend all these ranges

For other periods that my buddies are into, I have AWI, FIW, Colonial.

Synjin29 Aug 2009 3:18 p.m. PST

I love the Masked Warriors of Darkness from the Darkest Africa section. They are a bit campy, but make for great fictional gaming!

Dave was a good bloke, only met him once before he went to America, his original Platoon 20 stuff was very nice as well

Endless Grubs29 Aug 2009 7:01 p.m. PST

Anything to avoid in the Italian Wars or Swiss line? I'm tempted, especially after viewing the pike in the link above.

Thanks in advance for any info or opinions!

Tom Reed29 Aug 2009 7:04 p.m. PST

A Friend of mine has huge AWi, I must say that the only line I really didn't care for was their Samurai stuff.

Ancient Indians,WW1 guns,ECW

Any of their landsknechts are top notch. The artillery crews and guns are also well done. The Swiss, Spanish, Italians are boring. Personally I do not buy their cavalry, too small. For gendarmes I would pick up Eureka. Fits well and are outstanding and not expensive.

vonLoudon02 Sep 2009 11:46 a.m. PST

First, I have many OG figures and have bought them unpainted as well. I was disappointed in the Biblical Ancient lines. The Napoleonic infantry and the ACW infantry have a lot of similarity and some of the poses are off putting to me. The Samurai are okay in my book. The Renaissance especially the Eastern armies are very well done in my opinion. Good value for the money overall but some disappointments. Now I do have many painted ACW OG that will be in my armies in the near future.

skaran03 Sep 2009 2:10 a.m. PST

I've only got some Austrian 7YW figures which I was given. They are easy yo paint but their is definately something odd about their heads. Is is just this range or part of this range that looks peculiar?

celticfury13 Sep 2009 12:19 p.m. PST

my favorite og range is the one where i can buy individual figures – oh, wait, they havent gotten around to producing that one yet…sorry, but asking me to drop $30 USD for a bag of figures on a website where i cant clearly make out what the figures look like? its a bit much.

Curryman13 Sep 2009 9:31 p.m. PST

I have a bunch of the Blue Moon Roaring 20s gangsters and quite a few Old West figs from OG that I'm quite happy with. If you're not wed to historicals, they also handle the excellent Superfigs line of superhero minis.

Early morning writer15 Sep 2009 9:32 p.m. PST

why, the 15 mm version, of course! heretical and maniacal laughter will curse your sleep if you don't convert!

Playerone16 Sep 2009 8:37 p.m. PST

celticfury you probably are unaware of The OG Army Figures of the Month range, you can clearly make out what individual figures look like. Also you might want to consider browsing through bluemoonmanufacturing.com and crusaderminiaturesusa.com The OG ARMY discount applies to those ranges as well.

I decided to join. Could not resist all the offerings and choices available and they will keep me occupied for years to come. I googled several blogs with featuring pics of Old Glory ranges painted up.
