Just got my first box of Perry French the other day and I really like the figures. Planning to paint the first few stands this weekend but before I base them I need to figure out how to, which means what rules to use.

I have an idea in my head of what I want in a game with 28mm figures but without buying a bunch of rules I don't know which ones fit. So, with the following criteria (thought not set in stone), what rules would you suggest I look at:

1) Able to play on a 6 or 8 foot by 4 foot table.
2) 100-200 figures per side (included artillery and cavalry)
3) Musketry a must! I want my toy soldiers to shoot in this game. :)
4) Figure/stand removal. I like the visual representation of casualties and cohesion/morale loss.

Thanks!

If you are interested in Skirmish w/ a "pinch" of adventure & heroics mixed in, then Sharp Practice might fit the bill. 200 figs per side would be pushing the system a bit, but 100 figs or less would work fine. remove by figure. I use 1" Litko Square Bases and then place in movement trays.

Yup, Sharp Practice is great, although we usually only get @50-60 troops a side on the table. You might also consider Rank&File from Crusader Publishing: crusaderpublishing.com or the forthcoming rules by Clarence harrison and Barry hilton mentioned in the current TMP news.

My rules are free, but while they nail requirements #1, #2 and #3, they fail at #4 because we don't like our figures falling off the edge of the table and getting stepped on. Of course you could remove figures if you want to….just because we don't doesn't mean you can't. It'll just look silly to have one figure representing a battalion.

Oh well, up to you.

Hmmm…being 1:20, I don't think the new rules by Barry Hilton are meant for "100-200" per side…Just his artillery has about 10 figs per gun! :-) picture

Well, not very good for large battles at least Charles!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Sharp Practice was on my radar, just wasn't sure how many figures it would handle. I think I'll buy the pdf's for it and Rank & File and read through them.

I'll check out your rules too Clay. Points 3&4 were the ones I was most flexible on. :)

Oops, you are correct Archduc Chuck. My apologies.

Damn. Now I have to start my collection all over….

I think the League of Augsburg pictures are from Barry and Dave's 1:5 figure scale 1815 project for March of Eagles – the free Victrix Rules by Barry H. I only know this because I was just slavering over that gallery the other day.

So those artillery bases do not fairly represent the requirements for a sane game of either March of Eagles or Republic to Empire.

The March of Eagles rules can be downloaded for free from Victrix' website and are also worth a look for games of 100-200 per side.

'Sharpe Practice' with the additional rule set containing Richard Fondler and co. are £7.00 GBP each on the TFL site but are well worth the pocket money.
I'm only just venturing in to the world of Napoleonics but with these rules accompanied by the exquisite 'Alban miniature' figures I think I may be doing more than just dipping my toes in… time to clear some shelf space me thinks!

Have a look at General de Brigade too for 1:20 scale battles.

Re: the picture of Barry's grand battery. I think that is from one of his Republic to Empire games. Would represent two batteries with each model gun representing two real ones. It shows the actual amount of depth taken up by artillery comparred to frontage but I don't think you have to do that to use the rules. Looks great though!

ArchiducCharles28 Sep 2009 11:16 a.m. PST

Simon is right; that battery is from one of their Republic to Empire games.
I did not meant to say you had to represent batteries the same way as Barry did (which you don't). After some talks with Quindia, he explained to me that the basing and even number of figs per units seems to be very variable, depending on one's collection. So 1/20 is to be taken with a grain of salt, indeed.

I posted a similar question a while ago and the WAB Napoleonic rules were suggested. We intend to give them a try as soon as some minimal painting has been done.

They're a free download but do requre either WFB 6th or WAB

Capitan Games28 Sep 2009 3:35 p.m. PST

Try Capitan rules in capitangames.com they are a company level game with a perfect mix of action of infantry, cavalry an some artillery.

You can download the rules for free and 16 sample units.
