For the past couple of days, I've been working on a paper shanty town. The idea I had in mind was to do a couple of buildings in 28mm, 15mm, and 10mm. You can see an example of a large 28mm building ( ~3 x 4 x 1 3/4 inches) below:

Should I release the set as one product, or release one set for each separate scale?

I dig the wood and tin textures, but the brick just doesn't work. Is that some kind of red/blue camouflage pattern? If its a paint spill over the side, then why is their lighter colored mortar showing between the bricks? And why no matching stain on the roof?

I don't game in 10mm, so I would prefer separate scale products. I do like the models' concept, there are many places a shack can be used.

The brick was an attempt at doing a painted brick wall with plenty of chipping (so the real colour seeps through).

I think I know what you mean, something like this:

I think the shape you have looks more like this stucco over brick:

where the brick pattern isn't visible at all in the stuccoed areas.

I was watching some programme recently about an Indian shanty town.
When they could afford it, people replaced a floor's worth of corrigated iron and tea boxes with brick.
So it's my impression that most shanty shacks are wood and corrugated iron. The fancy ones start to have stories of brick – but the brick is the new bit.

The shanty town in the District 9 movie was awesome for gaming.

Are you releasing as a PDF or printed stock?

If PDF then you may as well include all 3, makes it easier for you, and gives the buyer a bit extra.

I think for printed stock then go with one size in each pack – otherwise customers will be paying quite a lot for models they may not use.

I would release it in the 28mm scale. I play in 15mm and use paper models all the time and most are 28mm. To get them to my scale I use the % print option on my printer. Most if not all printers have this option. It will save you time, so the model gets out faster.

I think Noelvh has a good point, depending how easy the construction is then resizing from 28mm to 15mm or 10mm isn't very hard for the user.

I've reworked the painted wall bits by adding more chips and flaking.

For rescaling, I actually started off the project with rescaling the basic structures. The 28mm structures take up 7 pages (most are one a page), the 15mm take up 2 pages, and the 10mm all fit on one page. The product is intended to be a pdf.

ah, the page count thing is something I hadn't thought of- in the interests of saving paper I definitely think offering different scales is a bonus. As for the product itself, I am not sure what your pricing would be. But since it is a PDF offering it as 3 separate files or one file should be equally easy.

Jakar,
I'm with Noelvh on this one. If you put them out in 28mm, AND tell your audience what scale you have designed to, then there is no problem to setting a printer to print down to the necessary size. As an example, I bought some of TVAG's 28mm buildings that are in 1/60th scale, and printed them out downsized for my games in 15mm with no problems. That also keeps pagecount lower for both you and your consumer.

PS: Please announce here when they are done. They look really good.

Jakar Nilson27 Aug 2009 2:58 p.m. PST

Ok, so I've assembled 28mm and 15mm buildings, printed out some 10mm (actually 1/144), and worked on the instructions and cover (still WIP, but at least the photoshopped shanty town looks good). Due to the file size, I think I will release them as three different products.

Ok, it's up. I hope people won't balk at the price, given its 18 pages.
