Unfortunately, I never got into Spasce Hulk. However, Space Hulk was what got me into the miniatures wargaming hobby.

Let me explain.

I was in a comic/game store in San Antonio, TX looking for something completely unrealated to miniatures gaming. One of the employees was assembling terminators. Overwhelmed with curiosity, I asked him what it was that he was doing. He described playing 40K to me. Being an adept plastic modeler, the idea of painting miniatures appealed to me. When he invited me to come back on game night, I accepted.

The group of gamers took me in even though I was much older than any of them. I played a game and was hooked. I later moved on to play historical miniatures games, but looked back at what got me started with fondness. When a historical gaming buddy sent an email to me about the release of Space Hulk I was thrilled. Here was an opportunity to make up for missing Space Hulk so many years ago. I had it on order within minutes of recieving his email.

Today I happened to go by The Bookery in Fairborn, OH (in the Dayton area) to pick up a copy of Martians!!! and a copy of the latest White Dwarf. They have a prerelease copy of Space Hulk on the shelf. The miniatures are assembled, but not painted and the card parts are unpunched.

I have to say that these miniatures are masterpieces! They are better than could ever be hoped for in metal and push the envelope of plastic miniatures design. The flowing robes, scrolls and strategic positioning of parts to cover seams makes each one of the sculptures a work of art. Did I mention that each model is unique? If anyone has any doubts about the quality of plastic miniature detail compared to metal, they won't after they see these. The September issue of White Dwarf is full of pictures of Space Hulk along with great painting guides. I must say, though, that the pictures don't do justice to the figures. They really cannot be appreciated fully by viewing a two dimensional image.

After seeing the box contents in real-life, having heard for years about how much fun it is to play and after seeing detail of the models,I'm sitting on pins and needles in anticipation of seeing my box on porch next month.

Fairborn , Its where I got my gaming start too. I was in the last Graduating class of Park Hills HS in 1982. Man, this brings back memories.

I missed it when it was originally released. Have copy of the new one on pre-order. It is a very striking set of miniatures, I agree.

XRay … you will love the game. Cool minis aside, the game itself is a tension filled, fast-paced roller-coaster ride. Never a dull moment, it is very cinematic.

If you've ever seen the movie Aliens … once the marine attack fgails and they become the hunted, you now have a sense of what the game is like.

Win or lose, every game I've ever played was way fun. And if you've got the time, play a scenario, then swap sides,a nd play again.

I can't afford to get this newest edition, but I have the last (and all the expansions for it that came in White Dwarf) and it's one of the few games that would still be a keeper if I had to take a 200+ game collection and pare it down to a top 20.

Come back and let us know how much fun/effort it was to paint those new cool minis : D

They are still out there. At nashcon in may of last year, I saw a mint copy on sale at the flea market table.

I played my 1st game of Space Hulk last weekend at the local with the demo set. Had fun. The minis are very nice. The terrain tiles were a bit on the shiny side and didn't look their best in the shop lights.

I also saw a copy of the new SH today. The Termies are incredible. The stealers less impressive on a sprue. But all the figs are very animated. The Card board floor sections are easily twice as thick as the previous editions. Unfortunately they did not open the rules so I could not read them.

There is also a write up of a game in the newest White Dwarf. Showing all the mini's and explaining the rules. From the write up, the rules look very very much like the 1st edition.

Once again GW emphasized that this game is only getting one printing. No word on how large that printing is. I look forward to getting my copy.

Cheers, Xin

Yeah, I was sort of hoping to get a copy of this too, but I can't afford it right now. By the time I would have the money, they'll be long gone.

Memo to Games Workshop: A lot of people have been wanting to see a return of Space Hulk for over a decade. Especially the newbs who weren't fortunate enough to get in on the game the first few times around. Now you re-release the game, at a horrendous price, and make it a "limited" edition with only 10 or so copies going out to each store that will be bought out the first day.

Gee, thanks…

Once again, we witness the "Great Games Workshop Dichotomy:" I don't deny they make great products, but they have this tendency to treat their customers like crap. (But like battered spouses, gamers keep crawling back with each new needless rules edition and price hike.)

Actaullay the price isn't bad at all for the contents. But the limited edition idea sucks…

I saw a mock-up of the cardboard box while visiting Warhammer World last week. The figures look great, lots of animation (as mentioned earlier). I only saw illustrations of the miniatures and floor plans, no actual miniatures or rules.

I am not so bothered about the Limited Edition, believing that this is the way forward for all the Specialised Games. We may now see other old GW games re-released in the same format. Maybe even Man O'War! The LE allows GW to still support these 'side games' while concentrating on the three core systems.

I still have not seen the latest edition of White Dwarf, but look forward to reading about this very iconic game.

I've never been into GW, and play very little but Historical games, but I had a friend who was into SH, and had done a lot of work on his figures (conversions, all sorts). We would play it as a bit of a diversion from bigger historical projects. Its a brilliant system, we played all the scenarios at least once, everyone a tense exciting game with the outcome always in doubt, and different tactics employed all the time.
A truly great game.

Dewbakuk26 Aug 2009 3:36 a.m. PST

Space Hulk is great. As for the Limited Edition thing, it's not really. It's a run of 75,000 copies which won't be reprinted (although I won't be surprised if it gets a revamp and a reprint in another 10 years).

It's a good decision. This is a stand alone game that isn't likely to generate a great deal of cash after the initial purchase, at least from most buyers. I can see them shifting the 75,000 copies within a year, if they reprinted they'd have another 75,000 which I doubt would sell anywhere near as well. Which would mean stock sitting on the shelves for a long time, which costs money, both in storage and in the production of the unsold stock.

By releasing it as a "Limited Edition" they ensure that the people who want it will buy it now to make sure they get a copy. Which means they get a return on their money quickly and don't have to warehouse them for very long. It's a good business decision.

It's like what Forge World do with the Amon Sul model they make, I asked them about it once. They expect to sell X number of Amon Sul models each year but they now only make it available for a few months around Christmas. Originaly it was always available. They've done this for a few years now. They still sell the same X models each year but now they only have to make it and hold stock (it's damned big) for a month or so.

It's all about production costs and warehousing. Opposed to how many you expect to sell. If GW don't really expect to sell more than 75,000 copies of Space Hulk, there's no point in making more. By making it a Limted Edition they ensure the sales are condensed into a workable time frame. It's a win-win for them and the people who want the game.

As to price, I think it's a little much. I personally feel £50.00 GBP would have been a more palatable price point. Several of my friends however think £60.00 GBP is fair for what you get and they're all buying it. Not sure if I will yet, I'd like a copy but when so many other people have one…. not sure I see the point :)

mweaver26 Aug 2009 4:44 a.m. PST

On another thread I compared the contents and price of SH to Descent, and my conclusion was that the $100 USD price tag for SH was consistent with (and probably even better than) FFG's pricing for a similar game.

Frothers Did It Anyway26 Aug 2009 5:01 a.m. PST

Now you re-release the game, at a horrendous price

£58.00 GBP including delivery (off GWs own site, even) is not a horrendous price. Lots of bits heavy boardgames cost around £50.00 GBP these days.

20 years ago Karl brought home the Space Hulk Game for our boys for Christmas. Good grief -- 30 years later and they are still playing games!! All here are excited about Space Hulk's return. Bev

Mutant Q26 Aug 2009 11:16 a.m. PST

It's horrendous when you can't afford it. ;)

And it still doesn't erase the fact that the chances of me being able to find a copy after I pull together the funds will be zilch.

Not where I got my start (that was Rogue Trader!) but my favorite GW product ever made. Alas, I will NOT be buying the new one.

Rob UK27 Aug 2009 11:48 a.m. PST

The new figures in the Space Hulk game look excellent. The painted example in White Dwarf are cracking. The lost terminator marker is a great looking bit of plastic!

Never played it, but you guys are making it sound very tempting.

Do you think I could use Mongoose SST figures for it?

Xintao29 Aug 2009 12:01 p.m. PST

Yes SST could stand in. The game is about Power Armored troops fighting off hordes of aliens. SST troopers fit that bill.
