Regarding the Garibaldian volunteers fighting for Greece, did they change from scarlet to khaki when in combat? Would not bright red be rather suicidal in modern warfare? |

You might check our special Balkans War issue of the Time Portal Passages. The work is based primarily on Greek and Bulgarian sources plus a couple of others. I am looking at my greek plate book which was fortunately sent with translation pages. There are three plates of the troops from this region. The regular officer and soldier are wearing a grren olive drab uniformThe officer waers the common 'saucer' (as we called them in the army) cap and knee boots. Not really unusual. the enlisted man wears a uniform matching OD brimless 'coffee can' cap with a frontal badge. The uniform is OD with even the matching belt in OD. There is red edged on the collar and shoulder straps. No cuffs. Low ankle covered but not higher boots.
The most colorful soldier is the irregular who like his Greek counterparts wears traditional clothing which varied from area to area. This soldier has a white blouse that extends almost to the kees and has a highly gold embrodiered red sleeveless vest. The knee high stocking are also white. He wears natural leather colored pointed shoes that are also embrodiered in red (I think). He wears a mid-blue pantaloonthat stops at the knees. His cap is the 'coffee can' brimless cap which is black on the sides and red on top. The final article is a multi-colored vertically striped embrodiered sashthe colors are alternating red-yellow-blue-yellow. The yellow is used between each red and blue section. Do not ask for the name of the book as it is in Greek but I think it is 'Uniforms of the Balkan Wars'. All nations of the war are listed in it. |

I don't really have anything to add in terms of uniform information, but I would like to let you know that Irregular Miniatures has been faithfully producing Serbs, Bulgarians, Greeks, and Turks for this conflict in 15mm. I've offered suggestions to Ian Kay and he seems willing to get the range done. May I suggest you email him with your interest in irregulars from Montenegro and elsewhere. I'd certainly buy some. |
