Working on some command figures for my Sudan and the question of regimental drums has come up. On campaign were they painted or plain? I can't seem to find an easy answer – if painted are there any images available in print or on-line of the regimental distinctions? |

Doubt they had drummers in the field by the 1880s. Cardwell reforms and all that. I'll stand correcting. |

IIRC the 'drummers' officially carried bugles on campaign, which were considered of more use for passing commands. |

From what I've been able to glean from various sources plain brass shell drums and regimentally painted drums were out there. I painted the regimental drum of the Grenadier guards as the design hasn't changed (with the exception of a few more battle honours) since then. picture |

Connard- The Perry's seem to think they were carried, and that's good enough for me. Tommy- Wow. Just wow. |

Tommy A. Very nice. I think I'll bottle out and go for plain brass to save some research time
and then I found this, so its got to be done hasn't it! picture When you did your guards did you add the badge to the helmet from green stuff? |

Oh my. those are insanely nice! Waiter give Mr. Atkins a drink on my tab. I do my drums a plain brass, since the troops aren't any specific regiment; they could be the Grenadier Guards one game and the Blandingshire Fusiliers the next. |
