I am looking to try painting my own minis, but I don't even know where to start. Are there any good books on how to go about it and maybe even how to do it with ouut spending a small fortune. Anyone with advice, links or books would be of great help. Thanks |

Are you asking about ships or in general? Thanks, John |

For WW1, look under Communications, there are four articles on WW1 and pre-WW1 warship colors. link For WW2, buy this book. It is the best single source going. link |

Do you want a book on how to paint or which uniforms and styles they wore during WW2? |

How to paint in general. I can't afford to pay someone else to do it so I will have to try it myself. Basics will do for now and once I feel Im decent at it I can go back and add detail. |

I think we're confused that this message was posted to a couple Naval boards (or maybe it's just me). BUT, in response to your question: For painting miniatures in general, I would recommend The Foundry Miniatures Painting and Modeling Guide by Kevin Dallimore. Amazon has it for a decent price. It talks about equipment you'll need (brushes, paints etc), and covers three basic painting techniques as well as drybrushing, inking, etc. The techniques are only basic layering styles, but I think they are a good intro into other styles and techniques. And if you decide not to pursue painting, the book is chock full of eye candy. |

Thanks Evilcartoonist!! I didn't mean to confuse anyone. It asked if I wanted to cross post this message so I did. Thought it would help get more response to it. Anyway thanks again. |

Perhaps this could be of interest for you. It's a compendium with material from the forums on that site (Cool Mini Or Not), so you can find most of it online, but if you want it structured and in one place, it's a perfect starting point. link From my own personal perspective, first of all you have to make some decisions – what period interests you and what scale/size of miniatures you'd like to paint would be first things you need to decide about. Once you've decided, tell us about it and people will help you along. |

Wow, that looks like a classy compendium- I may just have to indulge. Hmm, I wonder what format it is in? If it's PDF, it would be nice so one could print off pages to post next to the painting table as ready reference material. Thanks for the link, Minondas! Sunflare, Do you have an idea of what you'd like to paint first? Just curious. |
