The correct answer is 43 thousand, 567.

When I started rebuilding my 15mm Napoleonic collection, I set myself a strict limit of the units that I would collect. Unfortunately, evil people then began to release beautiful new ranges of figures, forcing me to buy them and build other forces (for example, 1815 Netherlands and Brunswickers).

I also happened to remember how nice Adler figures were and that led to a rather large 1809 project.

Then I discovered ready painted 1:144 scale WW2 armour….oh god, when will it end?

Back in August I posted here declaring I had more than enough now. I have a few thousand 28MM Napoleonics focused on the Peninsula and my only quest was/is to replace some old Spanish units I sold off recently. But no big hurry.

However, on Sunday I found a solitary AWI figure in my 'junk box.' I'm convinced it was an 'omen from Odin' insisting I slay my wife with a broadsword and dump some money into my paypal.

Since I quit drinking and smoking a few months ago, I've got to do something constructive with my money, like get some pals for this solitary AWI guy doing permanant sentry duty in the junk box.

What do you think?

"How many figures do gamers collect?"

Why all of them of course.

Musketier19 Nov 2009 3:12 a.m. PST

pbishop, quite obviously that solitary sentry needs to be relieved urgently, or he won't be much good in a sneak attack on your junk box! With AWI you don't need masses of figures for an enjoyable game. I warmly recomend All The King's Men for some light relief from your Peninsular pursuits.

Incidentally, I neither smoke nor drink, but I can use your argument just as well. The wife understands, so I have no need for a broadsword…

enough to refight Waterloo/Borodino/Elyau etc at 1/20 scale

christot19 Nov 2009 4:10 a.m. PST

The perfect answer Gen Guyot. (though you need a few extra, just in case).

It's like a college frat party. You figure on 50-100 people when you are planning. But somehow over a thousand actually turn up.

I'm always up for new Knights Templar figurines. You can never have too many Knights Templar.

There is a highly exclusive, unadvertised and secretly located Bank in the City of London.

It does not provide its customers with a balance statement:

'if you need to know how much money you have then you do not have enough to bank here!'

If you even consider it a realistic option to count your minis then you clearly have nowhere near enough!

Stop wasting your time adding them up and order some more!

My 10mm Zulu War armies are at 750 Zulus, and around 100 British infantry. ( I love playing
1/1 scale version of Rorkes Drift)

vonLoudon11 Dec 2009 5:58 a.m. PST

Wargames Illustrated #139 ran a favorite article about building both armies for two periods Napoleonic and Franco-Prussian. He built divisions. He mentioned having a hundred Franco-Prussian figures of one side or the other and if you had 500 figures you could represent the major armies of the Late 19th Century. So I postulated for that period 100 figure armies. What scale they were in I could only guess. Now, a napoleonic division might have 6-9 battalions and I would think 1:50 probably. If you get the chance read the article. It's fun and food for thought.

Well, my armies are 1:25 in 15mm and I'm collecting every battalion/squadron/battery that was ever raised and that is listed as being on campaign for the following conflicts – 1788 Norwegian invasion of Sweden [Norwegians + Swedes], 1788-90 Russo-Swedish War in Finland [Russians +Swedes], Russo-Polish War of 1792 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania [Russians and Lithuanians/Poles], 1814 Norwegian War of Independence [Norwegians and Swedes] and Bem's Hungarian army in Transylvania in 1848-49 [Hungarians, Serbs, Saxons and Wallachians, Russians, Austrians].

Finally, I'll be doing the following conflicts in 10mm at 1:25 as well, when I have the time – 1830 Russo-Polish War and 1848 1st Schleswig-Holstein War.

My wife thinks I have way too many figures but I think she has way too many shoes!

A single pair of sandels, with plastic baggies over them for winter wear is sufficient. Use the surplus cash in anticipation of a 20% off sale for Wurtenberger artillery.

Is this some kind of Zen Koan for wargamers?

Swampking13 Dec 2009 4:20 a.m. PST

BillsFan,

How right you are!! Though in Poland, one does need a good pair of winter boots to keep the footsies warm and toasty!

Viking Massacre,
Right you are!

Must buy new figs, must buy new figs [sitting cross-legged, Zen meditation style with a copy of WI or HG or even a dusty old MWAN or Courier at my feet!]

We all know the answer is……………………….NOT ENOUGH!

And my friends collect the wrong things :(

Condottiere13 Dec 2009 9:39 a.m. PST

Far more than I can possibly paint in a lifetime!

Jojojimmyjohn13 Dec 2009 10:04 a.m. PST

1,242 1/72 plastics.
About a 1400 6mm from Baccus and Microworld Games
~3-400 28mm about a third rpg Fantasy the balance Wargames Factory and Warlord plastics
Untold multitudes of 15mm (OK, three medium sized storage bins full….)

Overall, more than I can paint, but not nearly enough……
