I have "Memoirs of a Cavalier" by Defoe, and Du Maurier's "The King's General".

Any other suggestions? I found two children's / youth's books, but was looking for something more adult oriented.

Thanks!

It is a children's book and not in print, but For the king by Ronald Welch is excellent

Tranters two books on Montrose are pretty good.

For a fantastical take, try Poul Andersen's "A Midsummer's Night Tempest."

Blackadder, The Cavalier Years.

"Master Sawbones" by Jacqueline Lawrence – not bad.

"Simon" by Rosemary Sutcliff – a children's story but very well written and evocative of the period.

"The Rider of the White Horse" by Rosemary Sutcliff – an excellent novel about Thomas Fairfax and the war in the north pre-1644. (Avoid the bowdlerised and much cut-down children's paperback – go for the full adult edition.)

Probably all out-of-print now but worth tracking down s/h.

Nicholas Carter's series is the most fun and the most accurate, although not as well written as Du Maurier,Tranter or Defoe. An ECW re-enactor,Carter's battle scenes are excellent. The paperback series is not so easy to find and I don't think that it was ever published in the U.S.,but you'll be able to find all the volumes on the Amazon U.K. site. Let me know if you need more info.

'Turncoats Drum' Nicholas Carter an excellent book… 1643 the seige of Bristol campaigns.

Don't know the Carter books but I will try to find them as they sound interesting. I have the Poul Anderson on my book shelf as I'm a fan of his work (I especially like the time police stories and the Poletechnic League story line. A Midsummer Tempest is a good read but it deals with an alternative realities version of the ECW.

Nocholas Carter, "Shadow on the Crown" series:
"Turncoats Drum. vol I",
And Kings Men Crow,
Storming Party,
Stand by the Colours,
are the four I found.
Of the rest, I was able to get cheap copies of all but "For the King".
So thanks and let me know about any others!

'Harvest of Swords' was the other Nick Carter book. I think he only wrote five. His last one in the series, 'Stand by the Colours' was published in 1999. I wonder why he stopped writing this series?
