I am using Perrin 10mm Zulu war figures as a basis for my Brit/Zulu forces but want a little more variety in figures. Both Old Glory and Pendraken have ranges of figures in this period but which would match best with Perrin? Old Glory look to have the best mix of poses but the casting looks fairly stylised and they look larger figures (admittedly not by much)on the 10mmworld site. Pendraken look a better match but the poses are limited. I'd love to use all three manufacturers but think maybe that would be a noticeable difference. Anyone been down this route? Thanks. Gerard. |

I have a huge collection of 10mm Zulu War, most of which is Pendraken. The Perrin British infantry are too slim to use on the same base, but look fine in their own units. Commanders and artillery look fine with Pendraken. You can easily mix Pendraken and Perrin Zulus on the same base, even though the Perrin are somewhat smaller, because of the active poses and irregular ranking. My army was already mostly complete by the time OG released their line, but their figures match well with Pendraken, so the advice above should apply. They have a great selection of skirmishers for both sides. See 10mmWorld.com for photos of all of these ranges, a couple of Articles on the topic, and an extensive photo gallery of the battles from our Zulu War campaign. Feel free to drop me a line with any questions. Cheers, Christopher |

I, too, have both Perrin and Pendraken 10mm zulu war figs. Personally, there's always a slight difference between manufacturers, but they mix in well with each other. I'm about to order some of the Old Glory 10mm stuff to finish out my zulus and british cavalry. I don't have any of these figures yet, but don't forget about Magister Militum miniautres. They have a 10mm zulu line as well. magistermilitum.com I also saw a recent post that stated Steve Barber Models is going to release a 10mm Zulu wars Range in September. I contacted SBM and they said they indeed were going to have a limited release in Sept., with additional figures later. Figures will include all necessary British and zulu poses required for such armies. They would be packaged and priced the same as their other 10mm figures. On a side note, and one that I haven't tried yet, I thought it was interesting that some 6mm zulu war players used a variety of 'other' 10mm figures to fill in their armies. For example, they used some appropriate ACW confederate cavalry (floppy hats and rifles) for mounted and dismounted NNH, Napoleonic Prussian Cavalry (helmets) for British Cav. and some Napoleonic Prussian Artillery (helmets) for British artillery. I don't know how feasible it is for 10mm, but some of it may work? Lastly, I thought I'd mention that I made some 10mm Zulus 'on the cheap'. They were made from short sections of plastic sprue (from a model kit) for the body, a small piece of clear plastic that has been cut and shaped into a zulu shield, and a final splinter of wood from a toothpick for an assagai (spear). Once based and painted, it's hard to tell them apart from the metal miniatures. It took a couple of evenings of cutting, glueing and painting to do about 125 zulus. (about 8 hours at a total cost of $0!) From 18" away, it's hard to spot the difference. I've been amazing my gamign friends with showing them 'before' and 'after' painting "sprue-zulus". I'm planning on making some more "sprue-zulus" to help fill out the ranks of my 500+ zulus. I may get to post some photos on the "Colonial Wars" Yahoo group. David G. dglennjr@yahoo.com |

David, Magister Militum are the old Perrin line – so same figures, no need to try them! Regarding using figures from other periods, I use Perrin CSA ACW cavalry and dismounted troopers for Boers, and they work very well. Very interesting about Steve Barber – and just when I am breaking out my Colonial collection for an expansion

Excellent. Good information all round. I think I will give Old Glorys figures a go as I really like the variety of poses they give. Thanks for all the replies. Gerard. |
