What would the normal flight size be for: P51; P47; P38 all as long range fighter escort and B24 bombers Thanks, John |

Hi Fighters in finger four. Bombers in the "box." Rocky |

What he said – bomber boxes were usually 6, with 3 in close support of each other for 18 total. |

Fighters usually flew in squadrons of 12 – 16 planes. 12 is more likely, due to serviceability issues, unless a major push is on, like for D-Day, or another very important raid. |

If you are asking about the Flight as a sub-unit of the Squadron, it's 4 a/c for fighters and light and medium bombers, 3 for heavy bombers. |

Thank you guys. I was indead referring to the sub-unit of a squadron, but I did enjoy telling my mate that he had to bau another 15 bombers. His face was a picture. Cheers. John |

Speaking of bombers did they ever mix and match the boxes? Say late war over Japan
B29s with B17s or B24s? |
Doms Decals | 26 Aug 2009 10:46 a.m. PST |
No – to be honest late war over Japan was pretty much all B29s anyway, but as a general rule each bomb group was of a single type, so an 18-plane formation would all be the same basic type. |

Hi The performance envelopes loaded are very different, so no mixing for more than just 44! Rocky |

Even when the 8th AF flew raids that included both B-17s & B-24s, the two types were in completely separate formations. The B-24s were organized in a seperate Air Division. |
