I would be really interested to find out what (offline) magazines TMPers read and the regularity with which you do so. Are magazines being supplanted by the Internet? -darryl |

I figured that TMPers, by virtue of being on the Internet, would find it more relevant to them. I suppose my question is really aimed at people who still do read magazines and what importance they place on them. Therefore, rephrasing the question as "If you read a wargaming magazine, which was is it?" -darryl |

I think it's getting harder and harder to justify the cost, especially since I just look at it for a few minutes, then throw it on the stack. There's only so many times that you can read about how some club did Gettysburg and you can get most of the ads by going to the internet. |

The only one I purchase, and subscribe to, is Henry Hyde's excellent 'Battlegames'. |
Wargaminginmaine | 19 Aug 2009 6:09 a.m. PST |
I subscribe to only the SOTCW Journal at the moment. However, though this is slightly off-topic, I miss The Courier and Wargamer's Digest. I used to read both cover to cover, or mostly cover to cover. I read online gaming sites all the time but they do not fill the void of good print magazines. |
Big P from GMG | 19 Aug 2009 6:14 a.m. PST |
Wargames Illustrated and SOTCW Journal for me. Much prefer print to internet. |
CPBelt | 19 Aug 2009 6:31 a.m. PST |
None--too expensive, can't buy them locally anyway. Kind of. I still like mags. Can't take my computer into the WC. ;-) |
borrible | 19 Aug 2009 6:36 a.m. PST |
Before internet times I used to read a daily newspaper, one weekly and 5-6 monthly magazins, hobbyrelated and others. Now its just one computer magazine. Everything else I find online. |
nazrat | 19 Aug 2009 6:37 a.m. PST |
None. White Dwarf was the only one I ever read regularly. The historical mags unfortunately never seem to have enough stuff about the periods I am interested in. |
IUsedToBeSomeone | 19 Aug 2009 6:39 a.m. PST |
Miniatures Wargames Battlegames Slingshot (Society of Ancients) Ragnarok (SFSFW) WSS occasionally if the topic grabs me I've stopped buying Wargames Illustrated as I haven't seen anything in it to interest me in the last couple of issues. And no, the internet is in addition to a good magazine

white dwarf, but only for the pictures ;) and wargames illustrated occasionally simply because we can get it locally in the newsagent. |

Battlegames, WI, MW and Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy. Don Perrin's amalgamation of the Courier and MWAN, before it folded. Courier and MWAN, back in the day. The text is OK, for the most part, and sometimes very enlightening, but the pictures are (to me, YMMV) of great value from several aspects. While there is a bit of mis-information in some articles, most of the info is reasonably accurate. Also the 'how to' articles have proven of value (again to me, YMMV). I get each of the magazines monthly. The internet is also of value, however in a very different way. Too many websites don't include reasonable photo's of their products (too many to reproduce in some cases, I understand that, but Foundry seem able to do
) There are so many great info sites on the internet one can become consumed with them ! |

I don't always read wargame magazines. But when I do, I prefer WSS
.. I really miss MWAN

I only buy one magazine a year, for the last couple. When I go to Cold Wars,I buy a copy of Battlegames at OMM. I currently have issues #1 and #2. That's not to say I dont read any mags,I have a huge stack of oldies but goodies that I love to go through. Yesterday I was reading Mil-Mod from August 1974(and wishing I could jump into a time machine and pay those prices for figures!). |

I subscribe to Battlegames & Wargames Illustrated. I dropped Miniatures Wargames a few years ago because it seemed like the contect was pretty thin. & I'll drop Wargames Illustrated if it stays in it's current themed mode. I also usually buy the Too Fat Lardies specials if you want to count that. No internet stuff has replaced them yet. |
Karellian Knight | 19 Aug 2009 7:03 a.m. PST |
The excellent 'Battlegames', I have subscribed to WI but yet to be impressed. No. |

Wargames Illustrated, now that I can get it monthly at my local store. I used to pick up White Dwarf every month, but stopped when they went to $10 USD an issue. |

Still reading Wargames Illustrated and have been picking up Miniature Wargames when I see and article that I am interested in. Used to avidly read MWAN
before it was taken over and went to pot like the old Courier. I have been thinking about subscibing to WI, especially with their incintives, and Battlegames too. Of course I do get some content from the internet, such as TMP and other sites. |
The Tin Dictator | 19 Aug 2009 7:32 a.m. PST |
I subscribe to Wargames Illustrated, Miniature Wargames, Battlegames, Dadi & Piombo, and Wargames Soldiers & Strategy. Nothing on-line grabs me. But I do listen to a few podcasts, if that counts. |

Yes, Battlegames. Currently no. |
nycjadie | 19 Aug 2009 7:35 a.m. PST |

aecurtis | 19 Aug 2009 7:47 a.m. PST |
Then: Airfix Magazine, Military Modelling, Battle for Wargamers, Wargamers Digest, The Courier, EE&L, Miniature Wargames, Wargames Illustrated, Practical Wargaming, SOTCW Journal, Slingshot, White Dwarf, Citadel Journal, MWAN, Historical Gamer: to name a few. Now: None. "Are magazines being supplanted by the Internet?" Yes, I'd say so. Allen |

Just not getting enough outta them to renew. |

I buy Wargames Illustrated, but not regularly, only if there's something I'm interested in. I bought a copy of Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy, the english version of the Spanish Magazine. It's very good. |

No Quarter from Privateer Press and a White Dwarf every once in a great while. |
Doms Decals | 19 Aug 2009 8:59 a.m. PST |
Battlegames, and SOTCW Journal if I ever find the chequebook and remember to renew my membership. I'm also beginning to buy the odd WI again; not entirely comfortable with the number of convenient tie-ins to whichever range they like, but the overall quality looks to be pretty decent. |
runs with scissors | 19 Aug 2009 8:59 a.m. PST |
I have subscriptions to Battlegames and Wargames Illustrated (I resubscribed after a long break because WI has much more good content since the new management took over). I use the Internet to research things I already know I'm interested in, whilst the mags introduce me to new periods, ideas, scenarios etc. |
CeruLucifus | 19 Aug 2009 9:15 a.m. PST |
I read White Dwarf regularly; I keep meaning to re-subscribe just so I don't have my internal "this costs so much, is it still worth it?" conversation every month. I use the Internet a lot but the same content isn't really out there and of course, it's still easier to take a magazine to read at lunch or on a trip than it is to pre-load a laptop in case you go somewhere that doesn't have Internet access. I would happily get 2-3 other magazines by subscription (to keep costs down) if I could figure out what else to get. So thanks for starting this topic -- I will check out some of the titles others mention. |

I read "The Nugget", my only wargaming periodical at the moment. From 1968 to 1972 I subscribed to "Airfix Magazine", and from 1974 to 1978 I subscribed to "Strategy and Tactics". I used to get practically every issue of WI and MW for the first few years, but then they just got rather dull and samey. One year in the early 80s I subscribed to "Lone Warrior", but never bothered to re-subscribe. I am wondering about subscribing to "Battlegames", but most of my subscription money these days goes on things like "The British Army Review", "RUSI Journal" and "The Marine Corps Gazette". All the best, John. |

get them just for the articles. Like the French 'Vae Victus' and Italian 'Dadi & Piombi' (English version) |

Wargames Illustrated Wargames Soldiers and Strat Battlegames Dadi and Piombo HMG up till it's apparent Demise..(??) Dropped Miniature Wargames as the pics and same old figs over and over again got tiring. The fake smoke annoying. The content was sometimes OK. |

In a fit of nostalgia recently I dug out all the old issues of "Ares", SPI's sci fi/fantasy magazine that ran from 1980 to 1982 or so, and have been re-reading those. It's interesting to compare the articles and reviews from back then and compare them to what's happened since. The predictions concerning what would happen with computers, movies, TV shows, wargaming and role-playing are particularly interesting. And nearly all wrong. As far as "new" magazines, haven't picked up any in perhaps ten years. |

I subscribe to Charge for ACW and AFV News for the tankie in me. Currently getting the new Scale Military Modeling International (?) and drooling over 1/35 tanks. Also get North and South (getting hard to find in Canada) and occasional Civi War Times, America's Civil War or Blue and Grey. Used to get Slingshot and then Empire's Eagles and Lions,as I passed thru Ancients and Napoleonics. Has to be a "special" issue to spend the money on the glossy wargame mags. I really miss EE&L for all the copyright violations and the poor editing. Great magazine for the period however. I couldn't justify continuing my subscription when it went expensive-glossy with all of the poor editing still there and none of the similar "amateur" publication content. Rob. |

MWAN, Historical Gamer As for me now I still have most of all the old MWANs, All of the second or third interation of the Courier, and too many of the MW, and WI older issues. I think I have every issue of HG, EE&L, and two or three more that are now long gone. Today I do not subscribe to any but Charge! I do buy WI every month at the local hobby shop as they do not carry much (mostly model kits, Warhammer 40K, and FoW stuff) that I am interested in. I also pick up the odd issue of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy when there is something that peaks my interest. I figure it is one way I can support the local hobby shop, otherwise I might subsrcibe to both. VR James Mattes |
