Any suggestions for the creation of islands for use with 1/2400 size ships? I was thinking of using green prefab hills maybe glueing some sort of white cotton or flock to create waves breaking. Also what size buildings would go with 1/2400 size ships? M |

"Any suggestions for the creation of islands for use with 1/2400 size ships? I was thinking of using green prefab hills maybe glueing some sort of white cotton or flock to create waves breaking." Just use your regular hills. At 1/2400 most waves would be too small to be seen (unless its blowing a huuricane!). "Also what size buildings would go with 1/2400 size ships?" Umm
1/2400? Don't know of any 1/2400 buildings on the market, so maybe scratch build from balsa? |

Omit the waves, just glue down a ring of sand to make a beach. If you really, really want waves, just use white paint. |

These commercially available islands are wonderful. I use them with my 1/1800th ships. link Very good value, completely painted and ready to go for just $4 USD each. Chick |

Very easy to do. If desired, you can either put on a small, clear plastic base, or a thin, opaque base. The latter should be suitably painted to reflect various colors of shallow water, e.g. green and light blue, mixed in with a bit of darker blue. Paint thin lines of white around the island to represent the waves. If not putting the island on a sea base, you can sprinkle thin ribbons/lines of white sand around it as well, to represent the waves, and white sea foam. Works great, and isn't too hard to clean up after the game – just bring a small handheld whisk brush, and a dustpan, or a thin piece of cardboard. I recommend recycling the waves into a small, plastic container. |

"There you go. Everything you need in 1/2400 scale. And it is pre-painted, flocked and cheap." 138.50 AUS is about £69.00 GBP . You call that cheap? |

Those Pirates Islands, while nice, would be way, way too small for your consideration. Those pirate ships you see in the pictures are less than 2" long. The game they were made for is abstract when it comes to scale, so anything can work as an island (and the cardstock islands that came in the game packs fit inside playing card booster packs). The island Mobius provided the links to
now THATs an island. Something large, that ships must take many, many turns to get around. |

That's about $113.50 USD USD USD! Not including shipping.. Well, that seems to be for the entire coastline pack, 12 pieces. Doesn't seem so bad
but shipping could change my mind. hmm, $22.75 USD shipping to the US (MD) |

This post has been nagging at me all day, and then it hit me – check out War Zone Gaming Terrain Systems (links will be provided below). I have been using his hills for 28mm tabletop gaming for years. Made from that blue-board insulation panels, wonderfully flocked, these light-weight yet sturdy pieces have seen a lot of action. His stuff comes in several different shades (he calls these Scapes), and in several different styles (he calls these Scales). For my 28mm gaming, I always buy Terran "Scape" (green flocking) and 01 Scale (which are 1" thick, and have a 75 degree edge). But then it occurred to me this afternoon. One of his Scales is basically "natural", so no cliff face edge. I don't get those for 28mm figures (they don't like to stand up on slopes), but for an ISLAND they would be ideal! I would think many of his hill or mountain sets would be of great use. Also note, he has a sale running right now, not sure how long it's been going on, or how long it will last, so you have been forewarned. A few weeks back I ordered four new sets from him. My advice, don't delay. Anyway, on to links: Main Link: war-zone.com Select Terrain Sets on the left to get to the long list (with nice piccys). Check out (click on) Scapes and Scales near the top. You probably want Terran "Scape" for the green, but heck, perhaps an arctic convoy is in order. Then go with "Icelandic" (he has special requirements for orders though, this color was discontinued for a long time, and only recently came back). For Scales, click on 01 thru 04. The first three you will see the "cliff edge" I spoke of. With 04, you will see no cliff edge. That scale comes 3/4" thick. There are corner mountain and hill packs (so you could have a piece of an island up against the corners, forming a channel perhaps). In all cases, mountain packs have slightly larger pieces than hill packs): link link There are edge of board mountain and hill packs, so you can have a long island on the edge of your table: link link There are of course plenty of large, roundish mountains and hills, for complete islands: link link There are "Serpentine" versions of some of these sets. Those have more jagged edges instead of nice smooth edges. Not sure your islands in 04 Scale would be much improved, but perhaps they would. Compare this to the last link and see the edge differences: link On his X-Pacs page you can find a small pack of hills. Might be a way to try out his products without investing a lot. The pack comes with some nice "boulders" too that would be cool to tack on near a coastline, just offshore: link And finally, perhaps the best of the lot. On his Custom page, he has "Sand Dunes". These only come in 04 Scale (natural). The largest is only 8" x 16", and being complete "islands" no corners or table edges for these. But, you won't have to worry about lots of plateau islands either: link This last one is NOT on sale, however. Still, at $30 USD for a set of islands for small scale ships, this might be the perfect way to go. And for the record, I'm not connected to this guy at all, in any way. Simply a satisfied customer. Glad you liked that product line Michael. Like I said, after that first post of mine, this thread just kept bugging me. I "knew" I had something I could offer up, but couldn't think of what it was. Problem is, I have been suing his stuff for 28mm gaming for so long, I had forgotten about his "natural" scape. And some time back, I was wondering what the differences were between the four scales. He used to have a sample pack, and for not too much you would be sent four small hills (3" across or so), and each was in a different scale (and he flocked them a couple of different shades too. And I remember getting the natural one and thinking it was fine as a sand dune for 6mm – 10mm gaming, but it was nothing really to a 28mm trooper. It all came flooding back to me yesterday, and I went to his site, and checked out his scales, and sure enough he still offered up natural. Even found that sand dunes pack. Good Hunting sir. |

MircroForm Models, which is primarily an architectural model supply company, has 1/2400 scale buildings, airplanes, railroad engines and rolling stock as well as palm trees. haven't had a chance to complete my own 1/2400 islands yet but they are definitely worth a look. Paul |

I made mine like i would a hill. A sheet of thin MDF, cut to a "wonky" shape. Then i stuck blue styrofoam to the top, trimmed to the shape and then sanded down the edges so that there was a slope down to the water edge. Then, cover em in PVA and sand, then paint/flock. I know the ones in the pic aren't the scale you want (its 25mm) but i'm sure it would be the same principle for all scales. picture |
