What are they like?

Is it better to buy the pdf or the physical book for this game?

They based on the Mighty Armies: Fantasy rules formerly from Mongoose. Basing is 2 inch frontage by 1 inch depth (although any similar will work fine). All movement, combat etc is resolved by stand, so the number of figures per stands is irrelevant. Standard table is 2x3 feet for 15mm figures.

The mechanics are very simple, about as complex as DBA.

The highlight of the game for me is the build your own army system. Troops are rathed as light or heavy, raw through veteran quality, and given special characteristics to reflect special atributes such as javelins, warband etc.

The armies are not always balanced. Currently an all heay cavalry arm is a very effective ool for crushing all resistance. The developmnt team are working on correcting this. The best practice for developing army lists is to be guided by history and not play with min-maxers.

I have the pdf verswion and it is not overly long to print out.

That doesn't sound bad. I may get one for use with my Carthaginians.

and I'm not down with the whole min-maxing thing. So making a list from historical accounts would be my method.

thanks for the help Dave.

Dear Uesugi,
I hate DBA and I love Mighty Armies: Ancient.
They are different.
Mighty Armies is easier and the rules are very very clear.

Mighty Armies has the advantage over DBA of being written in English.

You can learn the game from the rulebook very easilly.
