This is a cool little "dice" game over at the History Channel Website. I've been playing it for a few days (off and on, of course) and thought I'd share the link:

history.com/expedition/game

This is a work-safe game that only takes a few minutes to play (as I said, I've played it over and over again). Just thought I'd share the link…

shelldrake14 Aug 2009 2:57 p.m. PST

This is actually quite an addictive little game – thanks for sharing :-)

evilcartoonist14 Aug 2009 3:41 p.m. PST

That was quite enjoyable!
A little dark when I started keeping dangerous animals to eat porters for whom I had no food :)

Carmen

Black Cavalier14 Aug 2009 3:53 p.m. PST

Haha, Carmen, I was just at the same point. I ended up accidently getting triple porters increasing my count porter count by 4, but with only 3 crates of food. I intentionally only took travel dice, in hopes to get rid of some of the porters.

It might be a bit better game if you could some how exchange existing resources for ones you need. It seems that finding food along the trail is pretty rare, & your number of porters is pretty random, so it's tough to keep a good balance.

teboj1714 Aug 2009 4:29 p.m. PST

What does the money do for you?

Servo300014 Aug 2009 4:44 p.m. PST

Fun! Like plating "Source of the Nile" in the old days!

The Shadow14 Aug 2009 5:13 p.m. PST

Finished the expedition with 1710 points. How'd you guys do?

shelldrake14 Aug 2009 5:16 p.m. PST

I have been playing for a bit and have yet to finish… I get halfway through and only get animals eating me :-(

teboj17 – the money adds to your points at the end of the game. Useful only (as far as I can tell) for increasing your score when it comes to Highest Scores on the site.

teboj1714 Aug 2009 5:23 p.m. PST

Actually I just came across a group of natives that demanded something to cross their land and you could pay them with money or other goods

2443. And the money can actually be used to buy food or medicine once you make it past the halfway point.

I have found that the trick is to get food early and you just need to lose that one "Trusted Porter" and take the danged rifle and the ammo when you find it.

Read the Help file… it actually tells you some very useful info.

aecurtis Fezian14 Aug 2009 6:35 p.m. PST

2230! Whew: that was grueling!

Allen

Hitman14 Aug 2009 7:50 p.m. PST

On my third try I succeeded. I ended up with 2970 points. I let 4 of my porters get eaten by lions on the last turn (not knowing I was so close to the end and not wanting to run out of food…besides I had 9 of them).

Personal logo mmitchell Sponsoring Member of TMP14 Aug 2009 9:43 p.m. PST

I agree, this would make a cooler game if you could have more control over your resources.

Hitman: I guess you're aptly named since you let lions eat FOUR of your porters! Way to go!

evilcartoonist: How did I not think of that? I bet my game would have gone better if I had done that.

Boone Doggle14 Aug 2009 9:59 p.m. PST

2850. Got to go for every $ if you want a high score.

Boone Doggle15 Aug 2009 1:47 a.m. PST

Lots of dice on the 3rd re-roll is the killer as you can't mitigate what happens then.

I found when I have a good ratio of porters to food and mileage is not critical, it can be helpful to pick porter/danger pairs to reduce the number of dice in the that 3 re-roll.

Given up for good15 Aug 2009 2:02 a.m. PST

Lousy score first time (870) but I will not be beaten by those darn mosquito thingys…

Now how many of you had thoughts along the line of:

1) A simple set of figures to paint up
2) A hidden track / simple tiles (like the GW 40K scout game whose name has gone at the moment)
3) Paper dice with the correct symbols on them
4) Must copy the options down next time I play

Go on – be honest grin

Thanks for the link – I can see a few hours passing with this over winter.

WOW!! Is that addictive or WHAT?!?!? Thanks mmitchell!

PzGeneral15 Aug 2009 4:19 a.m. PST

1800 points…now to dig out Source of the Nile…..

Given up for good15 Aug 2009 5:15 a.m. PST

Made it at last to the lost village after 128 days and 2620 losing 10 points for extra miles and 80 points for delays along the way.

All in all a very addictive game and one I shall really enjoy.

Tips so far:

Balance food and porters
Get the weapons but do not forget the ammo!
Balance life (extra porters) vs death as required

Remember the Empire and God Bless Her Majesty grin

4070. Didn't even make it to the end. I absconded with the $2,800 USD my generous sponsors sent megrin

Personal logo chicklewis Supporting Member of TMP15 Aug 2009 8:01 a.m. PST

$3,240 USD on my 14th attempt.

I now never take rifles, pistols, nor ammo. Hold out for the cash. Balance porters and food.

Boone Doggle15 Aug 2009 2:55 p.m. PST

Me too. Always hold out for money unless desperate for food.

Keep porters to a minimum, usually 2-4 and do whatever it takes to minimise dice on the 3rd roll.

Don't take any risks for speed cause the sponsors tend to send enough cash to make up for any extra weeks.

Get all the food you can at the milestones.

Personal logo chicklewis Supporting Member of TMP15 Aug 2009 7:20 p.m. PST

Oof, got lucky, $2,900 USD in contributions, final score 4260.

Stosstruppen15 Aug 2009 7:38 p.m. PST

That was a blast. I guess they set that up to pair with the expedition Africa show. That was a cool show as well. Not too dramatic but interesting to watch.

Weddier15 Aug 2009 9:45 p.m. PST

Reminds me of an old game about crossing the Gobi Desert chased by cannibals. Much better graphics here of course, but I miss the camel saying "Oww." when injured.

Good job Hitman! Looks like you got the highest score so far for a finished expedition. My highest was 2830. Once you're up around 2700-2800 it's tough to get any higher.

Personal logo chicklewis Supporting Member of TMP17 Aug 2009 4:36 a.m. PST

Hmmm, strange post, Shadow.

My 4260 points was for a finished expedition.

>Hmmm, strange post, Shadow.

You didn't say that you finished the expedition. You said that it was your final score. That's pretty amazing. I didn't think it was possible to finish the expedition and score that high in this game. I made it up into the 4K range, but didn't finish. Gratz. (-:

Kreegha!!! Warren Bundolo!!!

Score 2020.

Fun game.

Captain Crunch17 Aug 2009 9:14 p.m. PST

I finally finished an expedition. Only 2050 points but what the heck. The game is kinda addictive.

>Kreegha!!! Warren Bundolo!!!<

Ungawa!…Warren…Ungawa!

Very cynical game, right? "HMMM…lets see…if I have five bearers they'll eat too much food. I think I'll let one of them be eaten by a Crocodile". LOL

Boone Doggle17 Aug 2009 11:56 p.m. PST

It's gets more cynical then that.

Picking porter/skull pairs to eliminate randomn event rolls and avoid lions, crocs, mosquitoes which use up my supplies.

Oh Bugger18 Aug 2009 3:43 a.m. PST

Excellent! thank you.

Mr Brightside01 Sep 2009 8:20 p.m. PST

Took me a while but I have typed up a set of rules for using regular d6's. I also have a map and the basic scoring rules. All I need is to add the milestone dilemas and I will be set. I have set it in the Old West and have made it a group of adventurers going from Dallas to LA. A little farther than the 970 miles but it was close enough for me.

Hexxenhammer02 Sep 2009 1:26 p.m. PST

Wow, I read the thread title as "Africa Exploitation game."

Quadratus08 Sep 2009 6:38 p.m. PST

2670 fun but it's done.

wingnut21 Sep 2009 4:46 p.m. PST

2500pts…
Brave Porters seemed to be more plentiful than Bullets.
