hello, new to naval gaming(well I played AH trireme 12 yrs ago). Is there a ruleset for ancient naval on the scale of Wooden Ships and Iron Men? a conversion? I was just wondering after looking at Zvezda 1/72 ships.
thanks steve

I have seen miniature games using a modified version of the Trireme rules. Great rules and I still have a copy in my collection.

Some of the miniature games have been played on hex maps and some after some converstion efforts to inches and movement modifications have been played on non-grid gaming boards.

For the store I picked several copies of the classic RAM SPEED. They were only $8 USD retail so I got several. I will pick some more at the end of the month. Great game at a great price.

Try this page for Galley rules. Most Galley rules/games that have been published within the last 30 years are listed here:

Hey Eric, what about your rules?

When do they come out?

CorporalTrim13 Aug 2009 4:18 p.m. PST

There is Langton's Naumachiae, complex though. And some rule sets here:

What scale of ships did you have in mind, Steve ?

GreyONE13 Aug 2009 8:05 p.m. PST

My rules are due out very soon. My editor is working on it for one last time. Once he has finished, I will be able to publish.

I was thinking Zvezda 1/72 waterline models and using 1.72 troops

CorporalTrim14 Aug 2009 11:29 a.m. PST

Wow, That will be impressive ! But making fleets of Zvezda models is going to on the expensive side. You might consider fighting aboard smaller ships with 10mm or 15mm figures. I built a 1/100 paper model galley a while back and it turned out okay.

And I don't know if you've seen Paul Hague's "Sea Battles in Miniature" but he has a nice chapter on ancient galley warfare using his own rules and homemade ships with 15mm troops. I also like the idea of playing at this scale (or larger for that matter), your crew and marines can still be individual heroes. :-)

hey corptrim..very nice do you have a website where you downloaded that…how much was it?

CorporalTrim14 Aug 2009 8:25 p.m. PST

Thanks, Steve. It's by Schreiber-Bogen, made in in Germany. IIRC, I bought it from Paper Models International for around $15.00. Sadly, PMI has gone out of business. Could well be that other online paper models stores have it though.

For paper galleys try these:
romanseas.com

Eric has rules coming out soon, and 6mm figures fit on the ships.

"I was thinking Zvezda 1/72 waterline models and using 1.72 troops" -- Thorlongus

I am doing this same thing.

I've got almost 40 kits, with 8 built and not enough time left on earth to complete the project … but it is fun.

My plans involve a modification of these rules:

What are those ships like to build? I'm almost done with their 1/72 Medieval Life Boat.

krasturak08 Sep 2009 8:12 p.m. PST

The hull s of the models are fairly easy to assemble.

I am embellishing them with cloth sails, and simplifying the rigging.

Using the complete rigging pattern they suggest would take a great deal of time …

and since I want to use the models for gaming, I want to be able to add and remove the sails.

Similarly, the oars … there are a lot of oars. I've also got a system for adding and removing those, by packing the outriggers with cotton balls.

I played a game at Historicon 2008 with with somebody's home rules that played well.

I've made some progress with my 1:72-scale project using the Zvezda models.

Played Roman Seas at Fall In and was very pleased with the system and the size of the fleets a player can control. Seemed to play very fast. I enjoyed it so much I am investing in my own stuff to play. Been a long time since I have done that.
