I was wanting to build two opposing warhammer:ECW forces. Royalists and scots. I was looking at warlord for starters. How are the Warlord plastics? Do they blend well with other companies metals? Is there a better alternative? thanks in advance! |

I don't think there is a better alternative on the market at present. I bought a box of them this weekend past and have had fun assembling and painting the first 6 of them that I have done. I would have done more but I was pretty loaded down with other stuff to do. They really are nice figures and the box is well designed in that it does give you a very nice regiment. There are options in there for having some armoured guys if you want or having the whole regiment unarmoured. Presumably you will be getting multiple boxes so you could, if you wanted, make an entire unit with armoured pike. And easier way to do this might be to supplement a pack of Perry metal figs with the others. The one figure is standing with the pike pointing straight out of the unit, I probably won't use that figure as they can be annoying when actually gaming. That will be 3 figs less so instead of a 16 man pike block I'll probably do a 12 man, which works better with the 24 musketeers anyway. You can't beat the price and quality. The swords are separate on some of the figs but that is the only fiddly bit really. And honestly I'd rather glue them together than the metal pikes in the hands of the metal figures. I can't recommend them highly enough for ECW, or TYW if you are doing the later war. I have gamed ECW for years now, it is probably my favourite period. I used to do it in 28s years ago but for the last while have been doing it in 10s. These figures got me to switch back to 28s. |

Excellent all round and they are of an average size so mix in well with most other companies, I'm using Renegade and Dixon models to fill in some gaps and have no problem with size difference. |

They are nice. However, assembly is something of a chore. That's not Warlord's fault. It's just one more thing you need to do to get painting. The only other thing I'd point out is that some of the pikeman come in "charge pike" --pikes levelled-- pose. This isn't the most practical pose for the wargames table. As for mixing with others, they are noticeably smaller than Renegade. They are bigger than Foundry, Perry, Old Glory and Dixon (I have them all) but not noticeably so. I'd say the only range I wouldn't mix them with in the same unit is Renegade. |

For a Scots Royalist Army, take a look at Eureka Irish and Scots Royalists. link They cover pretty much all the Scots Royalist troop types except lowland regular foot, which are well covered by others, including Perry, TAG and Warlord. You can see painted examples on my blog

Can you get warlord from alliance? |

I bought a box last weekend to see how they would mix in with my collection. My solution for the errant pikeman is to put him in the rear rank towards the back of the stand with just a bit o' pike sticking out. Just enough to keep my opponent from pushing my other parts of my collection "too hard" into the unit. May sound weird but should work. Will post pics on my blog when done. I'm too busy finishing out two Forlorn Hopes-one Royalist-one Parliamentary. Finish out King Chuckles and his krew and I'm done finally. |

I've got a few of the Firelock boxes and I'm fairly impressed. I purchased the "Storm-Battalion" deal and a few of the hat packs while they had their 20% sale, and really do like the ability to help them blend with the infantry boxes. These and the Perry figs are what got me to try ECW gaming, and now they will be substitutes for Empire troops in my Warhammer army.

Warlord plastics look really nice, with fine proportions and careful detail. I just played with a pal who has several figs variaties, and they seem to blend best with Perry. And the benefit of plastic is that it's easy to convert – so if you don't like one pikeman, you can hack him up a bit and change where his pike's going, it seems to me! But Warlord's selection just now is limited – no cav and only scot gunners. Obviously they're planning more releases. Disadvantage to plastic is the assmebly time, but it does let you do more converting if you are so inclined. Another thing I don't like – they just don't have that nice weight of metal! But they therefore don't scratch as easily, either. Miracle Dip them in polyurethane and they can be tossed into a plastic sandwich container for transport. |

Oh, and they don't have boxes of just pikes, just shot, or seperated armored / unarmroed groups – you'd have to buy several boxes and sort them out. That's one advantage to most of the metal sellers. |
