Absolutely – you can usually find a guideline, but only as a starting point for the exceptions. Pick a plane and a theatre and take it from there….

If I had to suggest just one, for a number of CC aircraft, it would be white undersides, with gray upper surfaces, but as mentioned, the schemes vary all over the place, depending upon the type of aircraft, period of the war, and theater.

There was a bewildering array of paint schemes just for the Sunderland. John Evans, one of my former instructors, who runs the Flying Boat Trust at the former RAF Pembroke Dock (and also publishes books on Coastal Command as Paterchurch Books) is one of the most knowledgeable people on the subject and can be contacted here:

I have a copy of the Warpaint Series No.25 Short Sunderland. by Thomas Buttler. I highly recommend it if you can find a copy. I know its available on the internet somewhere. It has quite a few color plates Of the various schemes carried by them. Robert
