I've added the background material to my blog for a campaign called King Magnus' War:

It's named after the grandson of Harald Hardrada, who went by the magnificent name of Magnus Barefoot, and is set in an alternate history some 40 years after Harald defeated Harold at Stamford Bridge.

I've now fought the battle of Stamford, where Harald Hardrada meets Harold Godwinson:

Harold has now marched down to Hastings to meet the next invader, William of Normandy:

The last of the battles to establish the background of this campaign has now been fought. King Gruffudd ap Cynan of Gwynedd, and King Gruffudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth fought for control of Ceredigion and the honour of representing the Welsh in this campaign:

I've now got all the battles that set the scene for the campaign listed in sequence:

And I've added two rules variants. The first is that the Anglo-Norse huscarls are not QKed by knights. The other is that the 3Sp of the Welsh and Pre-feudal Scots are now now Light Spear:

I've finally made a map, of sorts, for the campaign:

Two battles have already been fought and I hope to write them up soon.

The armies have been deployed and war declared:

The first battle has been posted; King Magnus's Northumbrians met King William's Anglo-Normans, fighting for control of Mercia:

The second battle has been posted; Turlough Mór O'Connor invades the Welsh province of Powys and the Battle of Dinorben is fought:

Hi Mark

Applying this Sp(L) to Picts…
(Posted this on Fanaticus as well):

I've often felt somewhat reserved/uncomfortable about using Picts as Sp in DBA, as the thought of them being treated equivalently to hoplites just didn't seem apt. (Perhaps I'm wrong in this.) Your proposal represents a good 'middle ground' IMO. However, in the case of the Picts against Saxons for instance, the Sp(L) class for half the army does make them much more brittle against this historic opponent (and any other Wb for that matter). Not sure what can be done about this, as you can't have it both ways – other than allowing the Pictish general to field his 3Sp as 3Ax against Wb…!

No tidy answer to the vulnerability to Wb; in the campaign at the moment there aren't too many, so it's not critical, but I'll keep thinking on it.

The next battle has now been fought. The Islemen invaded Strathclyde and were met by the Scots:
