I've finally glued my first 28mm Vietnam Gunboat together and now it's ready for painting! The question is, on every single miniatures website I've seen, the boats are painted green, however, looking at period colour photos, they all appear to be in Navy Grey. Can anyone confirm which one it should be please? It'll just be nice to know. Cheers, Frankie |

Hmmmm, can't say definitively, but all the ones I recall seeing in movies and such were the usual olive drab. Same for color photos of them, if I recall correctly (don't remember seeing any in gray). Isn't everything olive drab, including the food in the c-rations? I wish I could be more definitive on the subject. You might try posing your question on the Narrowseas Yahoo Group as well, since no doubt others with the correct info will be lurking there. |

Frankie, most U.S. riverine patrol craft that were used in Vietnam were painted olive drab with dark red lower hulls, like these examples: PBR (Patrol Boat River, or "Pibber") picture picture PACV (Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle) picture picture ATC (Armored Troop Carrier) picture picture Plus, here's a page with some excellent artistic views of riverine patrol craft and their tenders: mrfa.org/windjammer.htm The exception would be the PCFs (or "Swift Boats"), which were painted a Navy Grey, such as the examples seen on these pages: link link Good luck on your project, Frankie! |

I just read 2 days ago that the Olive Drab color is a common missconception due to film types back then. The US Navy painted the boats "Marine Green". Check out the Rivervet site for mroe info. The only "brownwater Navy" boats that I have seen painted grey are SWIFT boats (coastal based units, rather than Game Warden units) and LCMs. Great project! |

Swift boats (PCFs) were painted gray while serving offshore as part of the interdiction operations (GAME WARDEN). When they were moved onto the rivers for later operations (SEALORDS) they were painted the same same green as other riverine craft. |

Doh, had the two ops switched. |

Doh, had the two ops switched. Actually, I'm the one who screwed up. MARKET TIME was the interdiction operation while GAME WARDEN was the earlier river ops. Sorry for the confusion
