I am thinking of starting a small painting service for 6mm. These will be mostly Baccus and Adler. I have looked to get some basic ideas for charging per fig, mounted, artillery ect; ect;.

Im sure my painting is up to an excellent standard but unsure of what to charge.

I came across turbil which charges 8p a fig, if all painting charges are that price I dont think it would be worth while.

All help and suggestions would be great guys.

Here is some pics to help you decide

ACW are among the easier figures to paint, Napoleonics usually require more work and so time.

How long does it take you to paint say 100 figures ?

How much do you want to get paid per hour ?

Cost in the overheads such as time spent researching and dealing with customers (this can add a lot if you need to discuss painting schemes etc), packing and posting orders and keeping a website up to date. Also PayPal fees may need to be taken account of.

That should give you an estimate of what you need to charge.

Turbils figures are popular but not at the top of the quality range – more for those who want bulk units at a very good price.

The painter I was using (very happily until ill health required him to stop) was charging 20p and 35p for foot/mounted.

If you can produce the standard in your photos at that sort of price I'd be interested.

There are a number of 6mm painting services active these days – why not just have a look at their prices/quality and get an idea of what the market is willing to pay.

Personally i would pay anything from 20p for a basic job to a £1.00 GBP for very high quality one but on average expect to pay 40p – 60p for a good quality service. (ie better than i can do myself)

I dont see how Turbil can feasibly charge 8p tbh. I have tried a couple of the cheaper 6mm painting services before now and always been disappointed.
SoI tend to avoid anyone charging below average market rates as i always figure there must be a drawback somewhere….

Very nice work. I've always been tempted by 6mm ACW.

I have added a few more pics for you to get a better idea of what my painting standard is.

Im not looking to set up a business or anything extreme, mostly doing the painting to sell to club members and maybe ebay

I can do about 100 figs within 4 hrs if simple and a little bit longer if complex such as Naps.

Please be honest but not brutal lol Any way her is some more pics.

Turbi charge 14p per foot figure for a basic paint job. From the photos you supplied yours is a much higher standard.

I would buy them – good job, especially by gaming standards – 20p sounds reasonable

Gunfreak02 Aug 2009 10:43 a.m. PST

I would pay anywere for 20-40p 20-30 beeing infantry 30-40 beeing cav, might even pay as much as 75p for a great painted general with ADC

Would I ask for more if basing them if so how much?

I have Naps from Turbil before I started painting my own and then starting me own painting service. Have a look on my blog at link for Turbil's result. You get what you pay for. The pricing explained above will work for you. Charge more if you are to a higher standard and people are willing to pay for it. It's all supply and demand.

Great Blog David.

Had a look at the pic of the cheaper paint job and as much as folk would say it okay for mass, for me it looks terrible as one comment said "it has ruined the figs" I agree I cant imagine that a 15mm collector or 28mm would pay under half the price they would normally pay only to see the models ruined, so why should it be any different for a 6mm collector?

Adler do lovley casts and to see them in mass with all the colours of the rainbow especially nap uniforms is inspiring even at the 3ft rule.

My painter charges me 90p for a strip of Adlers to the same sort of standard as your painting. (They are really 8mm troops….not 6mm). There are two cavalry or four infantry to a base, and I pay for painting only – I provide the figures and base them myself.

Given that you can pay £1.00 GBP a figure for OK standard 15mm I think its a fair price, and the work on a strip of Adlers is about the same as a single 15mm fig.

Anyone have the slightest idea how much a pence is in US dollars?

Cerdic01 Sep 2009 2:52 a.m. PST

A penny is worth, what, about 1.6 cents?
