H'yup chaps. Y'know the front rolled up coat or whatever it is on a Brit Drag-Goons saddle. (I think its a coat..its red) well apparrently sometimes some sort of net type thing was lashed onto that. To be honest , i havnt got a scooby, but Perry have sculpted their heavies with this weird net thing that might be holding down shoes or some other nonsense. Any ideas? And if so what colour should it be. Whilst im on the subject, I plumped for a deep brown for the tack. Was the Tack leather a standard colour?

Sounds like a forage net. Carried on campaign, but not normally carried in battle if there was any chance at all to leave such stuff at camp. Harness etc black supposedly, but contemp illustrations show several regts with mid/dark brown, so I think you're fine. |

Yes, a net for forage: presumably a sort-of "straw"/"sisal"/"hemp"-like colour, i.e., whatever materials the cords might be made of. |

I think the red "roll" over the front of the saddle is the cloak and water deck for the rider and horse. |

Whats the rear roll? A valise. A kind of cavalryman's knapsack if you like. |

And the waterdeck was carried around the valisse, strapped to the rear of the saddle. The roll on the front was the cape, folded to the same length as the heavy cavalry sabre, then rolled tight, and strapped OVER the front of the saddle, not in front of it, as it would then rub the horses withers. <<And the waterdeck was carried around the valisse, strapped to the rear of the saddle.>> So the waterdeck is not the light brown item on top of the rolled cloak then? link I see what you mean about the cloak being strapped over the saddle, rather than in front. |

In that illustration, it's hard to see what it is supposed to represent, either the hay net, badly rendered, or the leather 'cuff' strapped around the centre of the cloak to stop the reins chafing the cloak. It's not as large as the item shown in the piccies, tho'. John |
