Hi All I am starting out with some Jacobite troops and would appreciate any help with colours. I need colours for scots regulars of both sides. Clansmen i assume wore tartans or whatever was at hand. The OG I have ordered also include highland arty and cavalry, so any help there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

My son, you need to go to the source and not trust the Sassinach Scots Wars! Check it out – they have some pretty good pictures scotwars.com |

Pick up a copy of Stuart Reid's Like Hungry Wolves. Hardcover and full of color plates. Extremely good book! Get it cheap at Amazon. link Thanks, John |

You won't have a great deal of uniformed regulars on the Jacobite side. There are a couple of French uniformed infantry and at least one cavalry unit as I recall. Someone may be able to comment more on lowland formations, but I think these supplied their own clothing. If you are looking for more troops I have quite a few to sell or trade. The rest of my Jacobite Rebellion collection. Wife says paint it all now or sell it. Quite a few are nicely finished, but the bulk are still bare. These are Old Glory 25mm. Jacobites: 20 painted highlanders, 60 unpainted highlanders (mix of muskets and sword, inc. commands), 18 Royal Ecossais w/ command, 21 artillery crew, 10 FitzJames horse The Crown: 24 painted infantry w/ commands, 24 unpainted inf. w/ commands, 30 gov't highlanders, JBB-7 British high command, 14 artillery crew, 10 dragoons |

I am currently working on a 15mm Jacobite army (Old Glory- 15s), and I second picking up a copy of Reid's 'Like Hungry Wolves.' Also try Osprey's 'Scottish Jacobite Army 1745-46.' I just finished painting up the Lowland division, earthy colors- greys, browns, and tans, with a couple of faded red and blue coats mixed in. For the Irish piquets, I used French Regulars. And for the Royal Eccosois, I used Lowland Infantry painted up in the proper colors to pass for regulars. I am currently working on the Cavalry, hoping to have them finished by the end of the weekend. I am saving the Highlanders for last, as I am scared of painting all of those tartans. |

You don't need the fancy tartans that you see today. Simple checks will do, maybe just a few extra colours for the better-off and chieftains. |

Thanks for all the comments guys – I am doing 15mm and so far have ordered the old glory figs – waiting for them to arrive. From what I know so far there were regulars there (french, Irish and some Cav). I actually posted asking how to paint tartans a couple of weeks ago and I will be going: black undercoat dark green wetbrush blue thin line or 2 white or light grey thin line or 2 |

Interested in the views of the cognoscenti on this:- The point is often made that the clan tartans are Victorian inventions – and fair enough (my missus is a MacKay, so Government Sett for her and the lads). However, presumably in the 18th Century, the members of each clan would produce non-specific tartan clothing – or at least material. Presumably, the bundles of each type/design of weave produced by such people would be sold/issued within their own particular clan. On that basis, would there not be some degree of uniformity within each clan regiment – albeit not the "modern" clan tartan, but some other anonymous/generic design(s) – through the troops buying, or being issued cloth from the same bundle(s) of product? |
