No. 17 phases to a turn? rolling down to each subunit to see if they obey orders? a rule book that a supreme court justice could not parse? No. Someone's labour of love (and good on them for trying it) but virtually unplayable for the average gamer trying to pick up the rules and figure something out.

Someone will be along shortly to extoll the virtues of the second part of it which contains lots of detail about who commanded what during which years of the war. That is interesting, but not really that important from a gaming perspective. More scenarios would have been more useful.

They are a detailed set of rules and not that difficult to play. I prefer AOR which is a simpler set. I bought Flint and Steel after playing it at Historicon. It is an excellent resource for unit strengths etc.

I played it once many years ago and it went very quickly.

To be fair, the game was being umpired by Rich Kane, the rule's author. That may have had something to do with it. :)

I love the material in the book, but have only played the game a few times after I purchased the AWI Army from Clash of Armys and Charile dared me to play them. I did not find them too hard to play. Long turns but not hard.

I watched the game at Historicon for several hours and it went pretty smoothly, though the the orders rules were not used. The scenario was Monmouth, so there were lots of figures and varied commands and most of the players were new to the rules.

My understanding is that Flint and Steel is best for large battles and British Grenadier is best for smaller actions.
opinions on that?
