Hi, a few fool questions, having gamed WW1 for a while fnied some WW2, was thinking a daylight bomer stream of B17's, with fighter escort, so was thinking P51 and P47's. for the efending germans, FW190's and ME109's would this be correct? thanks in advance jon |

That's the nuts and bolts of the daylight missions over Northern Europe and Germany. Of course there were other aircraft (B-24, etc.), but that is a good start. The P-51 you would want for when the major battles were taking place is the "B" version, not the bubble top "D". The "D" did not show up until around Aug. '44. Most of the major battles had been fought in late '43 to Spring '44. There is a great scenario book that just came out with a good history of this from Skirmish Campaigns. Here's the link. link The book is called "Breaking the Luftwaffe" and was just released at Historicon two weeks ago. It is not yet listed on any of the websites I've checked, but it is a good location to start at. |

P-38's could also be used. You could throw some Me-110's and Me-410's in also. |

P-38'd are definite, especially earlier on. Also, Spitfires worked escort over France, but had to break off due to short range. This could be an interesting bit of flavor if you're looking for a change. |

Unless you try earlier like '42 and '43 when losses forced the USAAC to almost give up daylight raids altogether, and started looking seriously into the RAFs' night campaign. |

And also don't forget the ME-163 and Me-262. And the JU-88 "Zerstörer" versions fitted with a 37, 50 or even 75 mm cannon just to spice it up too :). Robert My 1/600 scale Yahoo Wargaming Group link |

My apologies, you wanted the later escorted missions. |

How about unescorted Blenheims, Bostons, Venturas, or even Lancasters? Yes, I know it will be a massacre but, sadly, it is realistic. |

Also remember some of the FW190 would have been designed as Sturmbock--with heavy guns and armour--interesting variation

Fw-190G's and F's have up to 6 x 20mm cannon & heavy armour plate – I remember them from the old SSI comp game "USAAF". Pretty much all the LW night fighters got used in daylight intercept roles, mostly carrying rockets, before there were adequate long-range allied escorts – but were quickly withdrawn once those arrived as they go shot to bits. Some single-engined LW fighters carried rockets too, just to add to the mayhem. |

As was mentioned above the ME-410 would be fun, Me410A-1/U2 (heavy fighter) 4 x 20mm MG151 cannon and 2 x 7.92mm (0.31in) MG17 machine guns firing forward along with 2 x 13mm (0.51in) MG131 machineguns in remotely-controlled rear-firing barbettes. Me410A-1 (light bomber) were armed with two 20mm MG151/20 cannon, two MG17 machineguns,two MG131 machineguns in remotely-controlled rear-firing barbettes and could carry 4,409lbs (2,000kg) of bombs internally. Me410A-1/U4 (bomber destroyer)was armed with a 50mm BK5 gun mounted underneath the fuselage. Robert |
