Subject: Observation Balloon
Manufacturer: Armaments in Miniature TMP link
Scale: 1/144
Medium: Resin
Price: $18 USD

Armaments in Miniature released a model of the Drachen Observation balloon in early July. I recently finished assembling and painting the one in the pictures below. The kit includes five resin pieces (top and bottom halves of the main bag, left and right halves of the stabilizer, and a basket) as well as four pieces of pre-cut, wire-filled string. The parts fit nicely and required just a little trimming and a little putty to fill the joints. The wire-filled string was a nice touch and much easier for me to work with than ordinary thread or string. The model in the pictures below is painted in GW/Citadel Iyanden Darksun. It has a dark wash and I added some pastel dust in between coats of a clear flat finish. The decals are from I-94 Enterprises link (GR-117 if I remember correctly).

Recommendation: Highly recommended.

What is that fully looking appendage on the rear of the balloon?

Idunno. I had the same thing when I bought a 1/72 vacuuform from rosemont Hobbies years ago.
An inflatable rudder?

It's a stabilizer. See page 450, 4th para of link

So . . . you went with the yellow.

Probably right about that color selection.

I am frozen in indecision right now.

The note at the picture says it is 1/100 scale. Is it 100 or 1/144?

An in person answer says it's 1/144.

I got two and they're beauties. Note that this model (type) of balloon is a bit smaller than the ones that were sold by Nexus for Wings of War. Not that these are 'wrong,' just that the type of balloon itself was a bit smaller. I think these will look fine on a Wings of War battle table and actually like some parts of it (like the basket) much more than the Nexus version.

Good work!

Looks GREAT as usual, Kev. Guess I will have to get a couple to go along with the WOW ones already in the trenches.

My only "issue" with the AIM model is that it is very rigid. The Skytrex one has a superb "droopy" look in the pic on their site .

Nice. So how is the balloon actually being supported?

deephorse27 Jul 2012 4:44 a.m. PST

See how the sky is somewhat distorted in a vertical line directly under the balloon? Looks to me like someone has tried to 'airbrush' a support out.

And here is the offending support.
