I've been told that this wonderful substance has changed and is no longer wonderful.

Any comments?

Please note that I was told by a member of IPMS and this is not trolling.

AFAIK excessive cross-posting is not the way to a brighter future.

I doubt it – it is still an acrylic polymer coating in liquid form – if it has changed I've not noticed it. Do you know when they changed it – my bottle is about 2 years old.

Where are you located?

In the US, S.C. Johnson's Future has changed its name to Pledge with Future Shine, but the formula is the same. I checked with the company some months ago when the label changed, and posted the info here on TMP.

In the UK, what was the exact equivalent--Kleer--has been removed from the market. A substitute, marketed as Pledge Parket Plus, has appeared in the Netherlands (according to info posted on the Too Fat Lardies Yahoo group), but it appears to be a different formula, as it is milky, although it dries clear.

The best source of information on the availability of Future, under various names, is:

Swanny doesn't mention the recent appearance of the Dutch product, but has the rest covered, AFAIK.

Cheers
The cross-posting was to get responses from as many experts asI could.

I'm in the UK and several d-i-y shops do not have it. Aecurtis, you cleared up a lot. Ta pal.

You mean the future is out of date?

Gravett Islander01 Aug 2009 8:15 a.m. PST

Don't worry, the future will soon be past its' sell by date.

Sorry, did not see this post. The Future I bought in Waitrose last weekend in an opaque white bottle comes out brown – do not know what colour it dries. It is a 750ml bottle

The 500ml clear bottle/clear varnish is no longer being made I believe. Amazon have silly prices. Yuk!

I'm in Canada and "Future" has also disappeared here. Instead the stores now carry "Pledge with Future" in 795ml clear plastic bottles.

It looks and smells the same as old "Future" . . . so it looks like it is simply name changes in North America.

I ordered a 500ml bottle of Kleer from Ocado, this morning. I hope it doesn't dry too brown…

Humidity can be a factor. Florida here. I recently was using Future on some shell holes wanting a "wet" look as well as some small puddles of standing water. The application was quite thick and initially was drying with a very milky cast to it. However, when fully dried, was crystal clear. I suspect, regardless of look in the bottle, since it was designed for floors any product which eventually dried either milky or with a brown tint wouldnt last too long on the market.

So… the Future is just what it always has been?

Back in 1990 i worked in a hobbyshop and discovered the future floor wax article in either fsm or military modeller.Eager to try this innovative weathering technique,i grabbed a T-72 kit.The kit was finished in Soviet green and tamiya desert sand, then i light wash of future cut with minute black wash ,treads received a similar brown wash.kit was dry brushed ,dull coated and given a grumbacher dry chalk drybrushing and final dull coat to lock it in. Was a remarkable job but by 1995 the general appearance seemed to darken with time.Same kit is now 20 years old and looks like british black -green.

I have just bought some Future and wanted to dry this Magic Wash. In reviewing the recent threads on it, I saw the one above by Warp Speed.

I am wondering if any other users could provide info on:
1. Whether or not there has been a darkening problem.
2. How long you have had it on your figures/vehicles?
3. If you have not had a darkening problem, do you know of anything you did to avoid it?
4. If you did have a darkening problem, do you know of anyting you did to cause it?

Thanks for any insight.

I decided I would get more responses with a new thread. So I did one.

Hearing the news I popped into my local Waitrose and was sad to see that here in the UK, Klear has also left the shelf. In its place is the Pledge with Future/Klear as described, in an opaque bottle and with milky contents with a hint of brown – boo. Only saving grace is I bought a bottle last year of the kosher stuff and have used less than 50ml to date!

bobblanchett16 Oct 2009 6:49 a.m. PST

ive been to the johnson site in Australia.. cant find it here..
has anyone found it or a substitute?

WarpSpeed16 Oct 2009 10:42 p.m. PST

Lads ,i admit that as a pack rat ,i have all of my 1/35th armour from the early 80s,dullcoated,dust might haunt them but a quick air gun and clen brush, drybrushing brings them up to speed ,not so the future finish kits ,how many plastic models survive 30 years tho?

Steve W17 Oct 2009 3:15 a.m. PST

I use 'Pledge One Go' in Australia Bob…Seems to be the same stuff..I got it in Coles asnd its a white bottle with a blue cap

Stefanpanzer17 Oct 2009 2:26 p.m. PST

I guess I'll have to get 'Pledge with Furutre/Kleer' and try and see if it still acts as a thinner as the Kleer did.

Karellian Knight20 Oct 2009 4:34 a.m. PST

I have used the new Pledge with Future and it dried clear for me. Smells a bit odd but works the same as the old Future.
