I have been reading the first few chapters of Esdaile's Peninsular War history and he states that Oman got the location of the battle (slightly) wrong, in that the Spanish were nearer Baylen and the French were on the higher ground. If you look at the Wiki link Esdaile puts the French where the Spanish main position is and the Spanish front line just west of Baylen.

I know that several real historians frequent this site, so I was just curious as to what the primary sources for Baylen actually are. I notice that the English wikipedia entry references English and French secondary sources. What do Spanish secondary sources say about the battle?

I'd also be interested if there was a good map showing where Esdaile is saying the positions were – the maps in his book are pretty indistinct, just schematics really.

Foy wrote about the battle in 'Histoire de la Guerre Peninsule sous Napoleon' (Paris 1827)

with footnotes

Gates' 'Spanish Ulcer' (1986) has an account of the battle, again with sketch maps

Thanks Connard Sarge, I have read those two. What I meant by primary sources was: what were the original eye-witness sources for this battle?

I know what you meant, but I don't know of any. Should have made that clear, sorry.

Foy (and IIRC Napier) are the only two contemporary sources that I can think of

You may consider starting with:

Title Guerre d'Espagne: Capitulation de Baylen, causes et conséquences. D'après les archives espagnoles et les archives françaises de la guerre, nationales et des affaires étrangères
Author Joseph Charles Auguste Clerc
Publisher A. Fontemoing, 1903

On Google (I am in Europe; I believe this is the link I used on a trip to America)

Then there is Vedel's version:

Title Précis des opérations militaires en Espagne: pendant les mois de juin et de juillet 1808, avant la capitulation du général en chef Dupont, á Baylen et Andujar ; suivi de pièces justificatives
Author Dominique Vedel
Publisher Impr. de Gueffier, 1823

I would also recommend the work by Clerc, available on google

Thank you for the kind responses. I'll have a read and then maybe come back for more on this…
