Well, I have a game for the original Mac (or at least the Mac Plus) called "Colony," where the player is a "space marshal", who has answered a distress call from a distant colony, only to discover it over-run by strange, geometrically shaped aliens. (It may have been first "first person shooter" game on the Mac). Great game. Space Hulk is the closest minis game to it. Other than that, I really can't relate anything to the topic, as I have no idea what the original post is referring to. |

Age 16-40 (More likely to recover from illness, injury and more capable of withstanding extremes of heat and cold.) Sex (Male dominated, females desired as long as they can hump their own gear and have a survivor mind set.) Physcial stature ( Fully mature in good physcial condition. At least one muscle bound male. NO medical problems.) Skills ( Jack of All Trades, Medical, hunter, fisherman, farmer, military infantry types Special Forces even better.) Mind Set ( Team player, worker, no problem killing, loyal, ability to accept current situation and adapt) |

What does this have to do with gaming?) It might spark some new ideas, scupts, games. some of the best ideas are the ones around you. Non-roleplaying character, playing character You and your friends and some family, have entered a reality show only to find out that after you entered, this one is for "keeps", the only way out is in a pine box, only the skills of your friends, family and you can save you now. Can You survive "The Game". character example 50 male somewhat in shape former sniper, jungle expert, small arms expert, survival instructor, sniper instructor, small arms instructor (retired) hobbies wood carving, gamming, runs a hobby farm, jack of all trades. Gee I wonder who this character is |

I would second major blunder---Being the only male would cut down on competition/conflict and as there wouldn't be much TV at least give us something to do and help populate the colony!
Although genetically it may turn into a weird Archstanton style Rimmer World

for those still wondering, I think this relates to the new sad excuse for a "post-apocalyptic reality show" on one of the Discovery channels. It's already a failure, as the show's premise doesn't take into account the underlying realities that any fan of the genre already knows, especialy that they wouldn't be going back to their normal lives in a couple of months, and would probably be fighting off raiders, bandits, and scavengers on an almost daily basis for longer than the show has them in "the Colony". it also doesn't take into account the unlikelyness of the people in the group to really be that fit & healthy, given the jobs they have in the real world, "pre-apoc." For the record, my regular gaming group probably has more survival skills than the guys on that show!(and were stereotypical gamer geeks with weight & health issues) |

Imperial Terran Marines. Half of them male, half of them female. A commissioned officer (assault rifle), a career NCO (assault rifle), the remainder a corporal (SAW + sidearm) and privates (Plasma, sidearms + rifles). All veterans of at least three or more combat drops. Physical stature: all in top physical condition. All have been psychologically screened and conditioned for greater psychological resilience and unit cohesion. All are psychologically conditioned to be resistant to the effects of trauma and PTSD by orders of magnitude. Skills: Team sniper with appropriate semi-automatic gauss rifle cross-trained as spotter, spotter cross-trained as sniper. The weapon? Think the stopping power and range of a .50 cal. Barrett rifle in the size of a conventional botl action rifle. SAW gunner and no. 2 (both cross-trained in one another's MOS plus one additional MOS as communications and technical repair and support). SAW (think gyroject capable of sustained automatic fire) with full ammo load. Gunner has sidearm, No. 2 has assault rifle described below. Plasma bolt rifle gunner and No. 2 as SAW team.Gunner has sidearm, No. 2 has assault rifle described below. Four assault riflemen/women with with Gauss Assault Rifle and integral pill grenade launchers. One is fully trained battlefield medic capable of performing emergency battlefield surgical proceedures and carrying an advanced battlefield medical pack.
All trained fully and certified in fieldcraft, survival, xenobiology, xenoenvironment survival, battlefield medic, weaponry repair and maintenance, unarmed combat, communications systems, and small unit tactics. El-Tee is schooled in small unit tactics, operations, and some strategy. All are literate to second year college level or greater. Full advanced combat armour with power-assisted man-amplifier exo-skeleton built in (does not enhance the strength like powered armour, but negates the weight of carried gear), comm gear, multi-spectrum vision protection/enhancement visors, respirators, emergency medical kits, field rations for two weeks, high-tech canteens with built-in water purification systems, smoke, fragmentation, and concussion grenades. Three shaped charge demolition bombs and spare ammunition for the SAW and Plasma Bolt Rifle are carried by all team members (note: PBG chargers can be juryrigged to serve as ad-hoc bobbytrap munitions, and these Marines are trained in that activity as part of their fieldcraft). Sidearms are standard Mk XXXVIII 9mm Powerguns. Think the Fremen meet Starship Troopers the novel with a heavy dash of Colonial Marines 'tude and humour and Hammer's Slammers professionalism and you get the idea. Now, what was the assignment again? You want them cleaned out by when? Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net

Fun show, but even then they've stacked the decks with trade-skilled people who can do practical stuff. A more realistic "The Colony" might have: Lawyer armed with Laptop bag School Teacher Burger Flipper with a baseball bat IT dude with a laptop bag Slacker teen kid with a skateboard and a DS Retail Manager House Mom, former marketing chick, armed with pepper spray Child 1 Child 2 Elderly Woman with cane |

Or the UK version:- * Human rights lawyer (male) (wheelchair bound – cannot operate in any environment that does not have ramp entry AND disabled toilet) * Management Consultant (female) * Local government computer programmer (male) (will not work weekends or outside normal officer hours – 9-3) * Aromatherapist (female) * Ex-Big Brother contestant/recovering drug addict (male) * Middle-aged divorcee (won't work with men) plus * Teenage son (gay) * Pregnant teenage mum (no skills/aptitudes/interests; wants to be a "celebrity") – plus * Two other pre-school age infants |

My approach would be similar to MajerBlunder's, except I would augment the colony with a huge pack of mind-controlled rats. Bet I'd make mincemeat of Dragon Gunner's jugendbund. :) |

I've actually thought about this a bit, only from a different standpoint: If a bunch of folks were sent to a new 'eden' planet, with only what they could personally cary, what would they bring and who would be best to go. Just from a long-term survival standpoint, if you've got ten survivors, you'd want three of them male, and the rest female. Get your gene pool as diverse as you can. Ideally, every woman would have at least one child by each male. Granted, you're still going to see some genetic issues, but not for three or four generations if you're careful with who breeds with whom. Hopefuly by then you've found other survivors, so you don't wind up with more toes than you need. Personally, if I was dealing with this, I'd go with two african/australian bushmen, three Amish including a blacksmith, and three 'modern' folks in decent shape, with a doctor, a physicist, and a chemistry professor in the mix, preferably military or ex- if there's a chance of mutants or raiders. This would satisfy short-term survival, later agricultural and housing needs, and preservation of the *important* parts of human knowlege be handled. As for gear, the usual things like machetes and shovels, but also things like slide rules, Curta calculators (frickin' awesome things – compact mechanical calculators), and micrometers. Especially the micrometers, as precision is key for advanced civilization. Drop that bunch into the middle of nowhere, and you'd be back up to early 20th century rural lifestyle in a couple years, their grandkids would fly airplanes, and probably have transistor computers before the last of the original colonists die off. |
