Here's a scenario I'm working up. This is based on Rattrap's 0.45 system. Any comments would be helpful:
Introduction
Early in the 21st century a great catastrophe took place which wiped out human civilization. Inexplicably, the newly dead began to reanimate and kill the living. It took place all over the world, slowly at first, but, as more and more people were killed, the numbers were added to an army of the living dead. The great cities of the world became populated only by the dead, who would wonder around aimlessly, looking for any living person to kill. Shortly after The Fall (as in "Of Civilization"), a few things became known about the reanimated dead, or zombies:
1) They would reanimate from any fresh corpse within 30 minutes.
2) With its bare hands, any zombie would immediately attempt to kill a living human. The zombies possessed no advanced skills, other than using rocks as blunt instruments.
3) Although they would do little more than ramble around on their own, the Zombies would cooperate to some limited degree with each other if any human targets were in the vicinity. Zombies would never attack each other.
4) The only way to permanently "kill" a zombie was by decapitation or fire. Severing a zombie's head from the rest of the body destroyed it. It didn't make a difference if the head was shot with a bullet, the zombie would continue to attack. The head needed to be severed from the body. Setting a zombie on fire would also work.
5) Once it reanimated, a zombie and its clothing would not change in appearance.
6) How the zombies reanimated or why they went after the living was never discovered.
The few people who survived The Fall banded together in fortified compounds as far from populated centers as possible. Contact between these compounds was infrequent.
In the Pocono Mountains, near the eastern seaboard of North America, several hundred survivors were able to fortify a resort and endure the chaos. Known as The Golgotha Abbey, this compound became a destination for all those who could make the trek to it. A wooden stockade around the abbey prevented the occasional zombie from wondering into the settlement. Continuous patrols prevented most zombies from ever reaching the abbey.
Just inside Golgotha is located a small barrack. Known as "The Sword Brothers" forty men and women have banded together to protect the survivors living within the abbey. Taking medieval soldier monks as models, they follow a modified monastic rule similar to the Knights Templar. With skills learned from old books and records, they have forged plate armor and built traditional weapons to kill any zombie which gets too close to the abbey. Their standard is a bright sun on a black field, in hopes of the day when someone in the abbey will find a way to stop the plague of zombies.
In addition to the defense of the abbey, the sword brothers conduct rescue missions. If any living person is spotted trying to reach the abbey, the brothers come to their help immediately. They also conduct foraging trips into the abandoned cities, which are now teeming with aimless zombies.
Scenario
Five armored sword brothers have been sent on a mission to find any isolated humans living below the mountains. They have traveled silently as possible, avoiding any zombies, to an abandoned factory fifty miles away. A scout reported seeing human activity near the building several months ago. If they find any living people in the factory, the brothers are to bring them to the abbey. Most people are over-joyed to learn of an actual human settlement, but some, especially those who have gone feral in the years since The Fall, need to be persuaded.
This is a stealth mission. There are plenty of zombies in the vicinity. The Brothers do not want to alert them to their presence.
Characters
The Sword Brothers consist of Don Edurado Del Oro (Grade 3 Knight Commander), Fra Gustavo (Grade 2 Squire), Fra Sanchez (Grade 2 Squire), Soro Maria (Grade 1 Man-At-Arms), and Luis (Grade 1 Novice). With them is the mysterious stranger Karl (Grade 3 Rogue), who has joined the mission to "prove" his devotion to the abbey.
The Game Board
This scenario takes place on a 2'X 2' board. In the middle of the board is the abandoned factory. It is approximately 1'X1' in size and 6 inches in height. To the right of the building is a small shack, which was at one time the guard hut. Both factory and shack are in an advanced state of disrepair since neither one has had any work done on them in over ten years. There are small trees springing up everywhere and rubble littering the all around the building. There may also be a few burned-out cars in what used to be the parking lot. No zombies are seen on the board, but that may soon change.
\
Victory Conditions
The sword brothers must find any human survivors in the abandoned factory and persuade them to leave.
Encounter Cards
There are two separate sets of encounter markers for this scenario: four markers for outside the abandoned factory, and four markers for inside the factory.
Outside the factory:
1) Ace- A box of rags, carefully preserved matches, and a tin of gasoline. Evidence someone has been living near the factory quite recently
2) Two- With apologies to Mark Twain and James Fennimore Cooper, a stick is broken underneath someone's foot alerting all zombies in the vicinity to the Brothers. See Zombie propagation rules.
3) Three- A box of moldy hundred dollar bills, left behind by the fleeing factory manager. Nothing useful.
4) Four- A large butcher knife wrapped in plastic. Honed to a razor and also a sign someone has been here recently.
Inside the factory:
5) Queen- A box of canned food.
6) King- The remains of a freshly killed zombie.
7) Four- An instruction manual to a C4 bomb wired to the factory's fuel storage tanks. A National Guard unit had wired them to blow in the early days of The Fall, but was never able to finish the task. It appears the bomb still might be workable.
8) Five- A scared and frightened 14-year-old girl. She's been on her own since the age of four and has a limited range of speech. She's understandably terrified of any other person and won't be easy to communicate with. All the brothers can get out of her is the name "Lar".
Special Rule
Zombie Generation. There are four points on each edge of the board. Each point is located in the middle of the edge. These are the zombie entrance points. Once the broken stick card is drawn, a zombie will be drawn to the sound and appear at one of these points. Zombies aren't very fast, each one only moves at 1" per turn. But the zombie will attempt to head for the nearest human and kill them. Once the first zombie has appeared, another one will make an appearance after the next turn with the same motivation.
And here is where it gets interesting: after the first four zombies have appeared, two zombies will appear at the generation points. Then two more the next turn. When two more turns have passed, three zombies will begin appearing at the generation points. The amount of zombies making an appearance will max at four per turn, but they will continue to generate until the game ends. So you might end up with a heck of a lot of zombies to kill if the team doesn't complete its mission and get out.
