Hey ya'll…

I just got into CY6, and bought a TON of 1/300 scale planes. I went ahead and cleaned up a few, got them primed, and then…then…then…

Then I realized I am not sure how to paint them! I am used to doing 28mm figs, and nothing like 1/300 planes. I am doing various types of ETO planes ( allies and axis… no soviet), and I have no reference on how the looked. OR for that matter, how to paint 1/300 planes!

Is there a good tutorial out there where I can start reading? Or some pointers? Tips on doing panel lines, etc…

Any help would be useful!

Thanks!

Richard-- this site is a popular one amongst CY6ers as it has pictures of tons of planes. I've used it for every one of my paint jobs I've done so far. You have to find references for the tops of the wings, though (although some examples have them). wp.scn.ru/en/cat

Here's a good page about B-17 markings. link

Unfortunately that's all I have right now. Perhaps a question on the CY6 Yahoo Group might garner a little more info. I know Scott and a bunch of his buds are on there regularly and they have bunches more sites they could tell you about.

Oops, I also had this one tucked away-- link

It DOES give the scheme for the tops of wings. Invaluable.

You will get better with time. Panel lines are easiest done with a very fine point marking pen or with an ink wash. I prefer an ink wash now.

nazrat,

Thanks for that link. I'd not seen that page before (and I've painted plenty of 1/300 planes).

Another good site for many pictures and profiles is link

The main tricks to work out that are different from other minis are canopies and panel lines. Almost everyone has their own 'recipe' for doing canopies. I paint mine in white, wash with a mix of blue ink diluted with Future, then go back over the frames with a fine brush or Micron 0.005" marker. The other item is panel lines. Again, a Micron marker works pretty well, but like magfor61, I mostly use black or brown ink diluted with Future.

The other trick to making the models look great is to get the decals for the insignia on well. After I finish the paint scheme, I spray the whole model with a coat of glass clear finish. The gloss coat makes a nice smooth surface for the decals. I swear by Microset and Microsol for putting the decals on. Then clear coat again and enjoy.

I also highly recommend the CY6! yahoo group. A great bunch who will always offer advice as well as interesting discussions, scenarios, etc. plus Scott and the others inside the CY6 cabal are usually around to answer any of you questions.

Hope they help

Haven't seen the other links referenced, but I use Nazrat's link all the time. Excellent source. Be careful, however, in that they are artists' renditions – colors may not be totally correct all the time, but for the most part it is very good. Osprey's books on aircraft tend to be pretty good from what I've seen, but that's more to invest in!

Well, as my club is more into brews and good times than 'historical accuracy', I am not too worried about 'correct colors'…

Thanks for all the links and inspiration!

I find a very light white drybrush blends the camo colours nicely and improves the model a lot.
