…or private/club/special interest group forums?

Hello, given the possible demise of yahoo groups there would be a good number of wargaming clubs and special interest wargaming groups on yahoo that would disappear.

What if TMP could offer similar services or at the very least private/membership approved forums for clubs and special interest groups?

I am thinking they could be hosted and moderated by a member for a minimal fee? The fee would depend on the level of support TMP provided, from a simple forum to full yahoo group style services.

Perhaps members of these groups/forums could have the ability to donate to TMP on behalf of the hosting TMP member to help spread any cost around?

Would you be interested in this kind of service from TMP?

If so, what kind of features would you like to see from such a service?

Thanks!

Adrian

I believe the Editor tried this once about a year ago. He created a board for some sort of Pulp game that didn't show on the main page and only a handful of people had access to it. I only recall it because it did show up on the main page once or twice as he was working out the kinks. I don't know how far it went; I don't suppose too far because you don't see anything about it anymore.

I sent the above idea to the Editor directly and he suggested posting my thoughts here and getting feedback. I wonder if that means it is a workable idea and only needs interest from the membership?

As a Yahoo Group owner I haven't seen or heard anything about the "possible demise" of the Yahoo groups other then just rumors. If it were to ever happen I have a Google Group as a backup :). Robert

I think you'll find it is the Geocities sites that are closing not the Yahoo groups

If yahoo is loosing money on yahoo groups then it may be a possibility that it gets cut…. and if they have plans to cut it do you think they would make it public? :)

Whether or not yahoo groups does go away I am still curious if members would be interested in this kind of service from TMP?

GeoffQRF, there's been a lot of discussion on techie related boards about Yahoo Groups, Youtube, etc., in that these companies are losing their shirts over these "services" and in tough economic times may need to reallocate resources. The advertising and marketing plans to have these sites make money hasn't worked at all, so at some point they may need to cut their losses and shut things down.

If you've got any hint that Yahoo is dropping Yahoogroups then by all means share it with us, else stop with the scare-mongering.

Rassilon21 Jul 2009 11:35 a.m. PST

No scare mongering intended… sorry… thought it could possibly be a good idea if yahoo groups did go away… and heck… dedicated forums to clubs/special interest groups might be nifty here anyhow. Didn't mean to ruffle feathers…

Yahoo groups going away???

This rumour pops up all the time. Don't worry about it Rassilon, grin but remember that it's even easier than in real life to start any kind of rumour on the internet. Your idea would hav been a good one had the rumour been true.

I'd hate to loose yahoo groups… I have a well populated group myself and the local HMGS chapter has some as well… :)

I tried to use Meetup groups in the past but they turned to a pay format to host/moderate their groups and the membership was fairly anemic at the time. :P

I have three myself. One being fairly active :). I have been an Owner and member of Yahoo since 2000 and every year there are rumors of the Groups or Messenger closing or going to become a paid service. So far none of that has happened. :). Robert

I can set up special forums on my site that offer photo and file uploads, notification of new messages, polls and other stuff that yahoo groups offer. Let me know if anyone is interested
