Could anyone suggest what a Belgium officer might wear in Africa 1860-1880s prior to the Congo and/or suggest any miniatures that might represent a Belgium officer. i.e. could I substitute a standard British or French colonial officer for the figure. What color uniform he might wear etc. Any help is appreciated.

Ask your library if they can order this. Or buy it, if you can afford it

One of the Foundry's better efforts

I suspect that a dark blue tunic or a white/off-white tunic and trousers with a sun helmet or a cap would work just fine

What do you mean "prior to the Congo?" What was there before that?

Foundry make Force Publique officers, they are perfect for the Congo Free State itself.

Rudi Geudens has a nice site with Belgian colonial uniforms:

Click on "Weapons and uniforms." Both the "Belgian Colonial" and "Force Publique" pages are worth looking at.

Hot button #47: using "Belgium" as an adjective.

"What do you mean "prior to the Congo?" What was there before that?"

Well, there was:

But I don't think none of them Belgium officers would of had uniforms back then.

I meant "what was there before that in the way of Belgian colonies in Africa", Allen.

To which I believe the answer is "nothing," (nothing officially Belgian until 1908 in fact, though you have the Free State from the 1880s) but I am willing to be corrected on that.

I am gaming a fictional Belgian observer of a British Column in Northern Africa. You know scouting out colonial activities for King Leopold prior to his acquisition of the Congo. Wanted to paint up a fig.

Plynkes21 Jul 2009 9:25 a.m. PST

Leopold's advance columns were people like H.M. Stanley. They didn't wear uniforms, just 'explorer chic.'

As it's fictional, it's up to you how they dress, but that's how it was.

RAFM's boxed set of Sapce 1889 heroes had one officer who, they said, could be painted as British or Belgian. Basic European style tunic, trousers, boots and sun helmet. For Belgians, I believe the instructions were to paint him white or off white.

I have that RAFM figure – very nice

Also, if the fig is an observer, could wear just about anything – if with the Brits, could very well wear items of British kit

Does Tiger miniatures make a Belgium officer among all the unique forces covered in the 1800s?

I went with a Peter Pig British foot and cavalry command packs, figured I could find something in there to portray him. Thanks,
