So, I have a couple of gaming project websites under Geocities. What alternatives are available for free/super cheap webhosting so as to keep my projects available for public use?

Do any blogging sites allow file hosting as well? Some folks have said they like my zombie skirmish rules and I'd hat to see the no longer available. A bit vain, I know, but there you go.

Take a look at bravenet.com

Sorry, I've been out of the loop lately -- was there some rumblings going about that Yahoogroups might shut down?

Or did I imagine that?

Jay Arnold21 Jul 2009 3:45 a.m. PST

Not groups, just the Geocities free webhosting.

If you don't intend to update them very often, how about just finding someone who has a site who will host them for you?

Surely someone out there into zombies and StarGrunt will appreciate the extra traffic.

I am more than happy to host stuff like that – free rules, scenarios, whatever. Just drop me an e-mail!

There's rumors in the techie world that Yahoo Groups may go as well. Everyone is looking to cut back and that's a lot of resources that they could use elsewhere as it's not making them any money. Google is thinking about shutting down YouTube as well as the advertising/marketing plan for it has been a disaster and they're losing money on it. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

If Yahoo drops its Yahoo Groups, I wonder who in the world will ever use Yahoo?

Schlesien21 Jul 2009 6:49 a.m. PST

Jay, good question. I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't figured out where to go next.

I'm predicting Yahoo Groups will bite the dust. I've seen a bunch of Yahoo features close:

Yahoo photos (which I was using)
Yahoo 360
Geocities (this Fall)

try 110mb.com.

Had very good experience with them.

Whoa..I'm in trouble if Yahoo groups go away. I mod a Yahoo group with over 160 gamers in my area and we use the group to schedule games across the diverse array of smaller groups, leagues, and individuals across the state. I mod a bunch of other groups as well. I guess I need to start exporting the member lists just in case.

Anyone know a possible timeframe? Days, weeks, or months?

Jay Arnold21 Jul 2009 7:21 a.m. PST

The Geocities shut down is in late October and they announced it about a month ago. I would suspect the Groups announcement to be on the same type of schedule. You're safe … for now.

Isn't Geocities part of the Lycos Group? As is Angelfire, which hosts my Website. Probably just the free hosting is ending for some (all?) of the Lycos Group sooner or later. Rumblings have been heard for quite some time by now….

Just in case Yahoogroups does shut down, I'm pretty sure I can host mailing lists on my domain (irvania.com) so I can move over the groups I moderate. Those are low-traffic lists though. I don't know what the bigger lists are going to do.

Perhaps TMP can expand and perform yahoo group like services to wargamers for those willing to pay a little extra fee to host them?

OR…

If not full yahoo group services then perhaps offer private/membership approved and moderated forums for local clubs/interest groups to members willing to pay a little extra to host one?

I believe the issues is the shut-down of GeoCities sites (hosted by Yahoo), not YahooGroups.

Anyhow, you can create a site at sites.google.com.

I use
Lycos Tripod tripod.lycos.com
and Google Sites as above.

Both free and easy enough for simple stuff. Google has no popups and more free space.

People who use Messenger and Flickr? ;-)

Problem solved. Thanks, emckinney!
