A good friend of mine is a big fan of ROTK and I want to surprise him with a present army from the period. Rules wise I will base it for Basic Impetus. What figurines are there out there and at what scales that permit someone to build an amry from the period before the Battle of the Red Cliff?

I was thinking of spending around 50 to 60$.

I'd go for 15mm. There are some who manufacture Han chinese. (Though I don't recall any Three Kingdoms era chinese figures. Han is close, but skip the chariots.)

Chariot made a rather nice range (now sold by Magister Militum)

Essex has Han chinese

And there are more, but I cannot recall them right now.

You will need heavier cavalry than the earlier Han. Armored horses are becoming more common during the 3rd Century.

Cataphracts from Essex's Tibetan range should do for the Three Kingdom's cavalry – I used TA11a for mine, which I also use for Southern Dynasties armies. These have half barding and lamellar armour.

Thanks for the suggestions! Now the question is how to translate the DBA army into a Basic Impetus one. Any suggestions?

nothing official, but a standard list could be something like
1 CM VBU=4
2 CL VBU=3, comp bow B
2 FP VBU=5
2 FL VBU=4, javelin
1 T VBU=3 with Short Bow a or XBow A
2 S VBU=2 with short bow B

Maybe add an option for changing a CL and CM unit or a CP unit to represent heavy cavalry.

yes many option could be applied
1) Replace 1 CL for one extra CM (or 1 CP) and viceversa
2) Replace 1 S for Art
3) Replace 1 FP for 1 extra FL and viceversa

I would suggest Black Hat from Scale Creep in the states.
