My 15mm Projects These are the 15mm figures I've acquired in the last year or so, or I'm in the process of ordering . . . (( can't believe I'm planning on buying more) POST APOCALYPTIC (early 21st century) Bio-suits (these two sets mix in beautifully) rebelminis.com/bizohu.html link Survivalists (about to place an order of these) link rebelminis.com/15moin.html rebelminis.com/15cico.html TMP link TMP link Ragers TMP link Terrain TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link MARS: 2100 AD (Mars Separatists) Mars Colony Rebels link Earth Troops And Loyalists rebelminis.com/eafoma.html Terrain TMP link TMP link TMP link OFF-WORLD COLONIES When EVA suits are needed: GZG and RAFM, armed and unarmed TMP link Terraformed Colonies (very Wild West, as in Firefly): GZG – Civilians, Free Trader Crew, Ravagers, Techs & Crew, Colonial Security Slintered Light – Spacers TMP link Khurasan Space Demons TMP link GZG NAC Troops link Terrain link LOST WORLD GAMING Victorians TMP link TMP link "Morlocks" TMP link Island Savages TMP link UNSURE OF THESE . . . Rebel Minis Scourge: Must buy them. Might use them as the last of the Martians – as allies to the Mars Colony Separatists. link TMP link GZG Alien Mercenaries: Got them and have put them away for now. Might make them a little more ape-like, and I might get the Orcs from The Scene and do the same to them. If it works out, they will raid the Off-World Colonies. TMP link Old Crow Infantry: These are slightly smaller than Rebel Minis which, in turn, are smaller than GZG. So, I will either use them as Post Apocalyptic military or as elite Earth Force troops for Mars: 2100 AD TMP link 15mm Spugs: Might be the reason behind the Post Apocalypse. Still trying to figure out what to do with them. TMP link TMP link Any suggestions? I'm trying to keep everything down to 4 basic genres (PA, Mars Separatists, Off-World Colonies and "Lost World" Victorians). CC PS. Some of my many other unfinished projects: link |

CC, Responded in the other thread re: building 15mm Forces, but my biggest suggestion might be to ease off and focus on the fleshing out forces. Chasing all the brand new flavors of 15mm is going to leave you with a lot of cool minis but no usable forces. -Eli |

I'm afraid you are right. So much to buy. Must exercise control and focus. CC |

I am in the same shape of CC, but fine with it. I think I am better off for support equipment since I have a lot of GZG, Old Crow, Rebel Minis, QRF, Combat Wombat, Heavy Gear and others to fill the role. I also have fantasy warbands and fuzzy critters. It's a disease, but I have a plus side. I've painted more miniatures in the last 12 months, including vehicles, than I have in the last 20 years. I find that 15mm is so much better for me than 28mm ever was since I actually find that I enjoy painting them so much more. Keep in mind that I am not a painter and see it as a necessary chore to be done, but what I do like is the sense of accomplishment involved in finishing whole groups of troops. I can do 40 or more figures in a weekend at a quality I can live with. That keeps me coming back for more. All in all, I love 15mm. I even got to play some Ambush Alley today with Cloudcaptain, so things are good. Jeff |

Jeff, Excellent! You have touched on the reason I originally moved to 15mm for most of my gaming. Much more forgiving to paint, especially when painting forces for army use. -Eli |

Hey Buddy! I completely understand buying all the new stuff. I'm doing it too. I'm also torn about which 15mm project to work on. Should it be a modern combat, zombies, gangers ala Combat Zone, Alien infestation with some Predators like the last Pred vs Alien movie. Or should I focus on my Stargate, ALIENS vs Colonial Marines and Preds or Man vs Machine. Of course I also own a load of Gzg, Rebel Mini's, RAFM, Spugs and 15mm UK Scifi figs. I have a lot of armor and vehicles. I recently finished up some Rebel mini's Ganger's, Swat and secret agents. Then I did Gzg Japanese troops and Power Armor. I started to put together my two platoons of new Gzg 6 wheeled armed NAC buggies. I still have a few 100 more of these to finish up. It's for larger scale hard scifi games including armor and aircraft. My plan of attack is usually to buy everything now. Normally, it'll never be cheaper and I have it on hand when I want it. I must admit that I am blessed by being able to paint decent looking figures pretty quickly. My advice is to start painting up your favorite figs or vehicles. That way you get right into the project and are more likely to show some real progress pretty quickly. Then paint those things that are a direct tie-in to what you already have completed. I need to knock out about a 120 15mm zombies. That will help me out on my projects. *edit I forgot to mention my new Firefly inspired figs from Gzg and 15mm Uk. Lots of possibilities there. Been adding armed Colonists and Police Security forces to the Ravagers and Merc's. My main forces tend to be broken into brown, green and gray uniforms. Thanks,
John |

John, Don't you end up painting into corners or taking "wrong turns" doing it that way? Painting without a plan seems like a sure way to look down at your tablke and go, "Nothing matches!?" I'm just curious. -Eli |
John Leahy | 19 Jul 2009 7:19 p.m. PST |
Hi. Actually, nope. My forces tend to fall into a few seperate categories for uniform. Brown, gray, and green predominate. Others like civilians, irregulars, rebels or individuals vary in colors. But since I have the troops already painted in storage cases if in doubt I just take a look at the painted figs. Matching colors is no issue. Of course, I wouldn't try and run large games with small forces either. I wouldn't have an issue with my NAC and NSC allying for a game. But I wouldn't likely have 3 or 4 differing factions on the same side. Besides, at this point I have 48-72 figs minimum of each type painted up. Thanks, John |
JRacel | 19 Jul 2009 7:34 p.m. PST |
I sort of buy and paint what I like. Since I plan to do small scale actions and skirmish, I do not need massive armies. That being said, I do have a LOT of some forces, but I also try and buy vehicles that I can use with multiple armies. I tend to have at least 40 plus guys of a faction minimum so I am in pretty good shape for most games. Jeff |

"Predictors?" I think he meant Predators. |
camelspider | 20 Jul 2009 6:25 a.m. PST |
No, he meant "Predictors" -- devilishly accurate estimators of occurrences, they use their uncanny advance knowledge to reap carnage on the battlefield. "I knew you'd step into that rut, Terminator!" |

I can do 40 or more figures in a weekend at a quality I can live with. That keeps me coming back for more. Indeed, after starting to paint in 15mm I might never go back- I am a SLOW painter, it used to take me multiple evenings to finish one squad of 28mm. I've spent less time on two 15mm sci-fi platoons then I did on a single 28mm unit. I think I'm switching over to 15mm for historical and fantasy too! -Will |
Noelvh | 20 Jul 2009 8:23 a.m. PST |
I my self made the switch from 28 to 15 in both Fantasy, and SciFi. The main reason for this is cost! But in any event I can also paint them up much faster, with some good quality. Now for painting schemes I take this approach. Look at the USA GI from WWII, now look at there uniforms, most of them never matched. There were so many companies making them they could not keep a standard color match. So you would have a bunch of guys in the same units with differing color uniforms. With this being said the same could hold true for the future. So sticking to a strict color code is boring. I like to do my colors based on the units I am doing at that time. And if I mix up my units I don't feel bad about it. Also there are time on the field of battle ware units are created on the fly with what ever in on hand, and this can lead to mismatched unit colors. So for me what ever looks good is good. have a look at my Blog theorky15mm.blogspot.com for a jig I use to paint my 15mm minis. I know it is a Fantasy based blog but the jig will work for any mini. I like to paint in 8 man units, so I mad the jigs for 8 men. I fist mount the mini on a roofing nail (has a very wide head), then place them in the jig for prim. Now I pull the mini out of the jig for painting and use the nail to hold the mini. Noel |

Noel, I love your technique of using a large roofing nail. CC PS. Now, if I could just focus, like Eli said, and not consider other projects, I think I'll be fine: TMP link |

On a related thread, Eli said: "GZG Mercs could work well as PA mutants or alien Mercs for your sci-fi settings. 15mm SPugs could fit in in the same way. Their small numbers (if you indeed do not have many) would keep them as accents but not a full force of their own. Old Crow Infantry could be wrangled into a Merc force as well. Scourge would work well as leftover AIs for the PA setting. I remember Gamma World having a lot of those." TMP link My dilemma is that I have to make sure to keep the Old Crow figures together with the Rebel Minis, as they seem to be a bit short and slender for use with GZG. link TMP link So, I would have to either use them with the Rebel Minis in 1) Post Apocalyptic (as part of the surviving Shadow Government*) or 2) as a specialist force (perhaps the Loyalists) in my Mars Separatist 2100 AD scenario. Wouldn't you agree? CC * I like the sound of that phrase, "a Post Apocalyptic Shadow Government", perhaps living underground, similar to the Resident Evil Umbrella Corp. TMP link |

@ TVs Frank: I HATE those guys! That army is darn near impossible to beat. The only way to win is to ambush the player and give him an atomic wedgie until he admits defeat.I'd rather avoid players with that faction as the assault charges filed against you with the local constabulary are generally not worth the prestige of being one of the few players to actually beat that army. |
Eli Arndt | 20 Jul 2009 12:44 p.m. PST |
CC, I wouldn't sweat scale difference. As long as they are not in the same force then it's not huge thing. Heck, they can even be in the same force, just not on the same bases. -Eli |

I forgot to mention that I also use some of the Mechs and vehicles from the clicky Mech Warrior game rebased. They will work quite well. Thanks, John |

I have Emu2020 (Eli), John Leahy, JRacel and Dropship Mark to blame for my conversion to 15mm and my resulting shopping madness. Eli and John are way ahead of me on new ideas, as well as tried and true methods for doing things. JRacel for the absolutely great suggestions and for posting comparison photos like these: link Dropship Horizon (Mark) for his amazing blog, tantalizing us with all the new goodies about to come out: dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com So, guys, where do I mail you my therapist's bill? :) CC |

Control? Focus? What are these words you use? Some strange foreign tongue, it seems. Forsooth, 'tis not the Queen's Gamer English of the One True Scale. Though it wounds me to say it, I have strayed from the Pure Faith on many occassions, most notably in this last week in Pennsylvania at the Grand Meeting that was held there
But oh the toys! OOooohhh! Shiny! |

The madness continues . . . I can't help myself!!! I feel as though I am at the mercy of teeny tiny little lead men and aliens. I keep hearing their diminutive collective "voice", all day and all night. CC |

Yes, I can see your problem in buying so much 15mm. You should hold off for awhile buying 15mm
.So start buying 28mm! |

This thread warms the cockles of my heart (or Obsession). Geeze I don't know what to say, so I am going to ramble. I started my impossible dream of switching to a "abandoned" size and genre of miniatures nearly a decade ago. It was a obsession then that involved many international phone calls and sending checks blindly to purchase obscure lines of figures that where only hinted at. (My first order of Tabletop's Laserburn figures, was to an address that I couldn't get any confirmation was still valid). But now with much wheedling, whining and proselytizing, many of the "Classic" lines are once again easily assessable from reputable vendors (Though a couple of vendors have been golden even in the dark times, I'm looking at You; Ground Zero Games (and your wormhole delivery system)) But now, my universe is inhabited, the projects in my head over flow
. Heheheheeee
. Such a wonderful time to be a fan of 15mm SF. |
