Hi All,

I just finished creating an Afrika Korps gallery on my site with some updated photos of some newly finished 6mm miniatures. Thought I would share:

Here are couple of pictures you'll find in the gallery:

They look fantastic

Deserter11 Jul 2009 1:49 a.m. PST

WOW! ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

How did you make the propaganda poster outside the Italian barracks?

fred12df11 Jul 2009 2:53 a.m. PST

They are really good -- good painting, nicely set-up photos. And all in just 6mm!!!!

I'm green with envy!

Jeigheff11 Jul 2009 7:27 a.m. PST

Those look great: good work!

jpattern211 Jul 2009 9:21 a.m. PST

Beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it :)

Deserter, as far as the posters go, I did a few searches through google images and then saved the ones I liked. I resized the images and then printed them out on an inkjet printer. Then just applied them using duco cement. That's it. Hope that helps.

An excellent job. that goes for the rest of the 6mm stuff seen too.
Could you let us know the paint colors you used for the Afrika korps… techniques..

:-) please ….

Miniaturerealm,

Thank you :) I used Lifecolor German Desert Yellow (UA084). I'm working on a tutorial for this project and it should be on my site soon, but essentially it's: 1. airbrush primer 2. Airbrush basecoat 3. MIG wash 4. drybrush 5. paint tracks/details 6. decals

Hope that helps,
Tanner

Tanner, when I look at micro scale models and they look like 1:72 models, then I know they are done beautifully. Good god man, these are very inspiring models. The washes are particularly well done.

I do washes myself, but what's a MIG wash? Sorry, but you mentioned it and now you have to answer! grin

Are these GHQ models?

Tim,

thanks :) MIG Washes are an oil based enamel wash and that's actually the name of the product "MIG Washes". They are premixed and come in a few different shades – Dark (for darker color schemes – Panzer Grey, Russian Green, etc.), Neutral (Dunkelgelb, White Camo, etc.), and Brown (desert colors, etc.).

I use the Neutral Wash the most and that's what I used for these vehicles. I also like and use the Dark Wash, but the Brown wash is too brown for small scales in my opinion and I don't use it much.

Here's a picture of the product I'm talking about:

It's great because it is oil based and can be cleaned and blended in a way that water based washes cannot (with a turpentine dampened brush). However, it is toxic like any oil based products so needs to be used with good ventilation.

These are indeed GHQ :)

Hope that helps,
Tanner

Tanner, as a 6mm WW 2 gamer for over 40 yrs now and that the "North African Campain" is my #1 gaming campain, I totally loved the detailing and paint job on your DAK vec's. I really loved the "Nam Era" barracks that you turned into an Italian barracks. I hope this means we will see some of your Italian pieces soon? If you are not devoted to only GHQ items, might I suggest you check out Armstrong Miniatures line of micro armour also? They have some great Western Desert pieces for the Italians, 8th Army and DAK. Some pieces that you will really love such as the "DIANA" 5 ton halftrack with the Soviet 76.2 mm ATG mounted that was built for the 21st Pz Div. All 5 units only saw action with the DAK. He also has the lengthened Pz II with the 15 cm SIG that also only saw action with the DAK and the VW beetles that the Luftwaffa and DAK used over 450 of in North Africa. He carries most of the Italian truck mounted artilley also. Sorry for the rant, but as you can tell I am a big fan of "North African Campain micro armour". I hope to see pics of your infantry and sorry to be picky, but you do realize that the Sdkfz 231\232 never was in North Africa and that the Swimwagen never was there or even in Tunisia either. I hope to see more of your pics.

Green Beanie, Phil,

Thanks for the feedback :) Green Beanie, I appreciate the feedback on Armstrong, I have been to the site a time or two but traditionally I stick to GHQ and a little of CinC as I really do like the detail. I may have to give Armstrong another look.

I do have a handful more of North African vehicles – British and Italian up on my site if you're interested in browsing them:

As far as Sdfkz 232 in Africa, you very well could be right I didn't research them specifically but I do recall reading that Rommel did get his hands on several Schwimmwagen's and was constantly requesting more because they were so well liked (although he didn't get many).

Thanks again guys,
Tanner

Bucco Bruce16 Jul 2009 11:46 p.m. PST

Very nice; I had to check they were 6mm not 15mm.

green beanie17 Jul 2009 12:18 p.m. PST

Tanner, I do love the pics and hope to see more as you aquire and paint more items. I will do some checking on the Schwimmwagen. The only book I saw was the vehicle encyclopedia that mentioned the sentences you quoted. I have a good library on Rommel and the DAK including a book on soft skins that is interesting for it mentions the French trucks that were supplied from Tunisia (about 900) that a deal Hitler made with Vichey to supplie trucks to the DAK so that they would not take up shipping space. Rommel as a Military Commander mentioned that when Rommel was put in charge of the German forces in Italy briefly that he noticed Schwimmwagons then and was impressed the the vehicle. Please pass on any info you have for I do love getting new data that may increase my game units.

Hi Tanner, great work re the SdKfz231 & 232 there are 2 pictures of them on this website afrikakorps.org if you click on the link at the top vehicles and then German there is a list of vehicles used by the Afrika Korps, at the bottom of the page there are photos of the vehicles. Was very useful as I had not seen any photos of the Krupp Protze Boxer with the Afrika Korps till I found it on this page.
Have not seen the PzII with SIG33 on the Armstrong Models website, but would like it to be produced.
Greg

Greg G1, i stand corrected, I believe you will find the Pz II SIG33 from Scotia Micro models. Hope this helps you.
