Hello.

I have a question that after some research I still am not able to answer. I am trying to determine what type of hat was used by the Austrian artillery during the period up to the battle of Austerlitz.

I first found this is an Ospey book, and thought the matter had been settled.

Apparently the second one, the Corsican style hat, would be the official headgear for them.

But, finding some other depictions, I find hats that are similar, though not exactly the same as the one suggested by the above sketch. For example, by tranquillo mollo

And then this:

The differences are slight, but there, never mind the fact that there are two different ways of wearing the hat!

I guess I could, and will unless I get any extra info, just follow the usual practice, and use the bicorne, as in Hourtoulle.

The bicorne was used throughout the period, though I would like to know what the regulation headgear was after all. Any links to paintings or photos of suggested headgear would be greatly appreciated.

On a relevant matter, the horse artillery wore the helmets as the line infantry, correct?

Anyway, this is my first post here, I am very pleased to have found this excellent forum, and I plan to take advantage of your hospitality and great knowledge ;-)

p.s. I am not sure whether I posted this in the correct forum, my apologies if I am in error.

I think you could only wear the "cool" hat if you were lucky enough to be firing a Bricole.

Being a pragmatician, I would go for the bicorne. The diffrence of the 1802 and the 1806-11 one is unnoticeable at any scale less than 1:24. That means that you can use your artillery for both the 1805 and the 1809 campaign. I tend to view paintings of the time as illustrating the "regulation" uniform, which almost never applies to reality since most units will use what they have until worn out. Since manuscripts show that bicornes were used by NCO's at least by 1802 it is a fais assumption that bicornes would have been used fairy early on.

On horse artillery I would aslo go for the bicorne after c:a 1800. I think there is an illustration showing horse artillery in bicorne as early as 1802.

Just my 2 kreuzers worth before the big guns tune in.

Cheers

I had not seen that, as it discussed mainly the colour of the coats. So a high bicorne (and a light brown for coats) would be the appropriate for Austrian artillery at Austerlitz and a few years up to then.

Thank you all, I'm much obliged

Almost as important, does anybody even make figures for the early turned up at the back hat or the corsehut anyway? (or for that matter horse artillery in helmet) Or, would we have to convert the entire artillery contingent anyway?
