I'm going to do a bit of samurai skirmish gaming – Seven Samurai inspired – but I'm torn between 28mm, or going for higher detail and 40mm figures. (Steve Barber models, probably.)
Does anyone else skirmish their samurai, and if so, what size would you recommend?

I love 28mm Perry Miniatures samurai. They have a lot of detail and are fun to paint. They also have far more variety than any 40mm producer. Check out Kingsford as well, also 28mm.

I don't do Samurai, but I have skirmished old west (Gutshot). I used to do 28mm, but I switched to 40mm and love it for skirmish games. The figures also simply look better displayed on the shelf.
So for aesthetics, I would say go 40mm, but the rules you use may also affect your decision.
This should be an interesting project to follow. Keep us up-to-date!

I would prefer 40MM after getting a small taste of such.
But I have never done Samuria so I am not sure what is available for that period and 40MM scale.

More scenary etc avaible in 25mm !

I've been doing Samurai skirmish in 1/35 scale with 1970's OOP plastics and newer candy toys from Japan, but I'm an odd one. Now that I'm collecting OKKO boardgame miniatures I've pulled out some old Clan Wars figures and I'm heading into 28mm territory like all my other gaming. It makes terrain selection far easier.

Steve Barber Samurai in 42mm are great – there only downfall is a lack of unarmoured samurai, peasants, ashigaru etc are all there, as are ninja – but the samurai are mainly all fully armoured.

I have 28mm and 42mm and end up using the 28mm for most skirmish stuff as there is a lot more choice of figures… the 42mm are great on the table though!

In 28mm you can find not only the warriors and lower classes but you can also find all the "props" such as correct wagons, kago carriers, odd monk types, buildings, lanterns, bridges, tori gates, shrines, buddhas, mystics, monsters, and other set dressing. Find an Omikoshi in 42mm that is sized for gaming and looks correct – then look for one in 28mm.

I am also interested in finding out what your final decision is and what you end up collecting.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone – much appreciated!
I'm leaning towards 40mm; simply because I like the bigger models for skirmishing. But the whole scenery thing makes 28mm look very tempting.
For rules I'm going to be using a set based on GW's LotR set – it was a free download, but looks like it'll work well.

I'll probably sculpt the main characters myself; and buy figures for the 'fodder' – villagers, soldiers etc. 40mm will let me go to town on modelling and painting; but 28mm will be a lot less hassle to set up. But then I usually end up making my own scenery anyway!

Hmmm, this is obviously going to need some thinking over…

Hi,

Just food for thought. I am currently sculpting a line a Samurai miniatures for a game I am also writing called Yojimbo. You can see some greens here on my blog…

jcfigures.blogspot.com

The first multi part set of Samurai and Ashigaru are already in the process of being cast along with a couple of ninja and warrior monks. As you can see I am also working on the Undead Samurai and will start on some Oni soon. I'll probably have the first few figures up for sale in a couple of months with a PDF of the rules online.

Semper,
JC

They're lovely figures, JC – I'll probably have to pick some of those up when they are released. One question – are they 28mm or 40mm?

JCFigures07 Jul 2009 6:45 a.m. PST

They are 30mm figures, and thanks. Pretty excited about getting some painted up and advertised out here.

Samurai skirmish deserves 40mm

nycjadie07 Jul 2009 3:57 p.m. PST

JCFigures – I really look forward to seeing those models. Keep us posted. Will you be selling them directly?

JCFigures07 Jul 2009 4:28 p.m. PST

Jim Bland of Victory Force Miniatures is my business partner. The figures will be sold through Victory Force but listed under JCFigures. I have some figures out there now but they are from years back, before I was deployed to Iraq.

JC – those are nice multi-part figs. I recall your knights from the VFM catalog – very nice also. BTW, would you consider 28mm multi-part plastic samurai? I'm sure those would be a welcomed range. Regards, Dean

P.S. Good to hear you're back home, safe & sound.

Lovejoy08 Jul 2009 2:17 a.m. PST

Okay – decision time; I'm going with 40mm. I like bigger figures for skirmishing. I've also got used to seeing my son's Space Marine Terminators on the tabletop, which while technically 28mm are actually 40mm tall. And I like the size!

It'll mean more work on terrain, unless I can find some usable O gauge stuff; and I'll have to sculpt the Ronin myself; all the 40/42mm samurai I've seen so far has been heavily armoured. Still, I'll give it a go! How hard can it be, after all? :)
Thanks for all the replies, everyone!

PrimusPilus07 Aug 2009 9:50 p.m. PST

Which Skirmish Rules do you use for Samurai?

Lion in the Stars09 Aug 2009 2:51 p.m. PST

Oh, wow, JC, those are great! looking forward to more of them.

Welcome home, BTW!

I'd prefer to use 28mm stuff for skirmishing, personally, but if you've found some 40mm stuff you like, have fun and post some pictures, Lovejoy!
