an 'only joking' smiley to aid the hopeless literalists and humour impaired? I think some would find it a boon, especially the folks who find the concept of 'humour' alien. It would absolve them of the need to correct those of us who sometimes post feeble jokes. Example Smart arse, "Why would anyone want to invade Bongolesia?" Hopeless literalist, who has read several learned papers on that very subject, "two columns of who, why, where, and when in boring detail. Probably ending with the insinuation that Smart arse should do a little research" I believe a signpost such as this would be just the ticket for these poor souls. |

I think you'll find that as been stated mnay times in the past on this board, a or a should have that affect and has been in use for many years – as stated here TMP link I think you should have done a litle research. |

Unfortunately streetline, the smiley and the winky are not obvious enough. As you would know if you had done a little research. |

I will quote you from the primary sources when I consult my library of original works later

Utter nonsense, everyone should know that Bongolesia submit just with a prolonged naval bombardment of her Royal palace, the use of invasion columns is not necessary. Which was the icon, btw?. A smiley banging another one repeatedly in the head with a rubber chicken? |

| Connard Sage | 06 Jul 2009 8:04 a.m. PST |
Thank you streetline, I shall look forward to reading them. I do hope they are taken from the original Bongolesian MS I had a Ginster's pastie oh Saturday BTW. It was full of gristle. |

I like pie. As for CS's point, I think a rubber chicken or a <snark> </snark> tag set would work. Though I think trying to get even a majority of TMPs active posters to use either (or any) such symbol would be a lot like herding cats, or nailing jello to a tree

What's this; a bunch of smart arses are invading Bongolesia! Why wasn't I informed of this? I'm pretty sure given just a little bit of time I could mobilize the nasty pieces of work to intervene. D~ |

"an 'only joking' smiley to aid the hopeless literalists and humour impaired?" How about an "I am utterly serious and this research is for my PhD thesis" icon; after all, one should label the exceptions and not the norm. |
| Connard Sage | 28 Jul 2009 8:44 a.m. PST |
Yes, that too Lentulus. Should flush a few more out

Whatever smiley you invent would get ignored by the humor-impaired as the regular smiles are currently. If it's a problem for you, you could add "I AM KIDDING" in big letters at the end of your posts. |

I have no objection to adding more emoticons to the system, but we need the art before we can really put this to the vote. Therefore, I've turned this into a contest (see today's Editorial). |

| CeruLucifus | 23 Apr 2010 12:08 p.m. PST |
Besides a smiley made up of [colon] + [left paren], or :) , it is common to indicate "just kidding" with J/K, j/k or jk. Or (just kidding) or (joke). |
| CeruLucifus | 23 Apr 2010 1:46 p.m. PST |
donrice: Besides a smiley made up of [colon] + [left paren], or :) Did I really post that? I mean [right paren], of course. (Not kidding.) |

I might be taking this too far
