I was wondering if anyone out there played, or had photos of, some huge starship games.
And by huge games, I'm refering to the ships, not the number of them.
I'm thinking full sized models, or huge scratchuilt stuff.

Soon I can post photos of our games here, but for now I was looking to see if anyone else did this.

I've seen photos of some very impressive stuff, including a 6' or more long Star Destroyer, and various other vessels.

Sorry, don't have links to them, but they were impressive looking.

Some smaller, but still quite large escort-sized vessels as well.

These were mounted on stands, at about waist to shoulder height.

I think they were using other Micro-Machines, or Titanium diecast metal fighters around their periphery.

They looked very impressive, and no doubt were a joy to have a battle around.

I have some of a Trek game I ran using a modified version of B5 ACTA. I use models ranging from 1/1400 to 1/3000 scale. I have 5 Romulan Warbirds that are pretty large. The Klingon Vor'cha is about 12-14 inches long in the pics.

Thanks,

Even the little, 24" long models are quite impressive.

There was a 6' – 8' model on sale on eBay some time ago, that looked superb as well. I don't believe I have any photos of it though.

The Rhinedahlen club ran a huge game in 1994 with large ships on large stand on a huge black mat painted with stars, suns etc etc. It had two sides too.

The ships were about 1 – 1 1/2 foot long "Toys" that made laser noises etc. Each large ship had a crew of 3 who sat on a platform, the Captain at the back. As a ship sustained damage they had to don rubber gloves and then "bucket helmets" as life support systems were destroyed!

A fun game was had by all I reall!

Tally Ho!

Big ships as terrain for smaller models to fight over?

Sci-Fi city here in Olrando FL used to put on some huge Star Wars games using six foot star destroyers and some huge Rebles ships. I don't have any pictures. I never played in the games but the ships did not move very far.

I do like the idea of using large ships as terrain to fight around using smaller ships.

Klebert L Hall06 Jul 2009 8:40 a.m. PST

I played a modified FT Star Wars game with a 3' or 4' Mon Calamari cruiser, and some fairly large other ships (including some kind of transport). The fighters were closer to scale, that way.

Starship! by Flagship would lend itself well to using plastic kit sized ships to battle it out. Its still a project I have on the back burner.

These are the kind of guys that bring me back to the realization that I am sane. "Honey come over here and look at this web site, see it is not me who is really crazy look at this!"

CmdrKiley06 Jul 2009 11:02 a.m. PST

A few years ago at Gen Con there was a Full Thrust game played with Revell Battlestars and Cylon Base Ship models. They were mounted on flight stands at about 5 off the ground. They also had flights of Vipers and Raiders, using some small scale pewter models, probably Studio Bergstrom stuff, on similar flight stands.

LOL dmebust!

Zen Ghost Fezian06 Jul 2009 11:32 a.m. PST

CmdrKiley is right. I remember seeing pictures from that game. They maybe on StarRanger's site.

Wow, I am planning on doing the same thing with my larger Bergstrom Bsg fighters and model Basestars and Galactica.

Cool.

Thanks,

John

I played the Star Wars Macroture game the first year they had it running in Orlando (It was put on by Sci-Fi Supply IIRC)

I rammed my Nebulon B frigate into the Star Destroyer! The play area was 40' x 50' and there was a good bit of movement with 30-40 squadrons of fighters, two Nebulon Frigates, two Blockade runners, 1 Dreadnaught, one 6' Star Destroyer, 1 Imperial Customs Frigate, and 1 of the Star Destroyers that can drop you out of Hyperspace (Can never remember the name of that).

It was a TREMENDOUS amount of fun. We were the first group to ever take out the Star Destroyer.

Toaster06 Jul 2009 4:09 p.m. PST

Someone used to run games with 3 crew per ship model at conventions in the 80's and 90's but I don't know if I still have the magazine article. maybe someone has a scanned copy they can post.

Didn't some outfit play FT Star Trek variant using AMT/ERTL kistes on a basketball court?

lugal hdan06 Jul 2009 5:46 p.m. PST

I've seen a Silent Death game run on 5" hexes with starships a foot or two long and fighters many inches long. It's pretty impressive.

Wyatt the Odd Fezian06 Jul 2009 6:55 p.m. PST

I saw the article about the model-scale Star Trek game in, of all things, a Fine Scale Modeler magazine, I believe.

It sounds like the Rhinedahlen club game with each ship having a "crew" of 3-5 players and damage being reflected by the players having to wear helmets or communicate using electronics.

By the way, the gravity-well projecting Star Destroyer is an "Interdictor Class".

LOL Wyatt! I remembered in the middle of a meeting this morning!

I played in one of the Sci-Fi Supply Star Wars games at a convention in the '90s. Want to say Roc Con in Charlotte, NC, but it might have been Dragon Con in Atlanta. Game was a blast. The Star Destroyer was a good 5 feet long at least. It moved mighty slow compared to the Micro Machine fighters.

My only complaint about the game was the Millennium Falcon was way too powerful. I still enjoyed myself, it was a blast.

Last Hussar08 Jul 2009 10:40 a.m. PST

Sorry- did no one else pick up on

I'm thinking full sized models

just the x-wings would be the size of a jet fighter- where the hell do you store a Star Destroyer

DS615108 Jul 2009 5:35 p.m. PST

I'll have all the space I need once I finish my 1:1 scale globe model.

Last Hussar09 Jul 2009 11:15 a.m. PST

But think of the cost of flock!

Top Gun Ace09 Jul 2009 7:51 p.m. PST

I've seen pics of the Star Trek game, indoors, on a black background with a square grid overlay for movement. Not sure how that works, but probably easier to produce than hexes.

Of course, you can get vinyl flooring in hex patterns, which might be a good idea.

It appears they were using the big one to two foot long model of spaceships, on poles set at about waist to chest height.

Of course, for the ultimate 3-D battle, without actually going into space, you might consider the following, assuming you think you have the skills to properly maneuver such a craft:

Jay, they ran it at GenCon a few years, along with a two-scale Ogre game (approach battle with original metals, final battle with roughly 1/72).

Last Hussar, I was wondering how the usually acid-tongued posters could hold off so long, as well. ;->=

I've yet to assemble same in the most of a decade I've had the idea, but I've collected a few ST (AMT three-packs) models and three foot tall lawn sprinklers and driveway markers that have good lawn spikes, with the intention of playing Full Thrust in the park.

Why are large tape measures 35', when I need 36' for 1' mu sized range bands? ;->=

DS615117 Jul 2009 6:02 a.m. PST

I saw as laser measure at Home Depot the other day, accurate to 1/16th of an inch. It seemed to work well, but I couldn't find a price.

That would be cool for stuff like this.

FYI, what we wound up doing: link

It was a terrific time, and I look forward to playing it again, but not too soon.

Covert Walrus10 Sep 2009 4:43 a.m. PST

DS6151, that was impressive – I do like your idea for the large SSD boards, and the ships are well made too. Well done all round!
