I was wondering if anyone could suggest good 15mm Knights and Crusader figures?

I have bought a couple of old glory boxes for use in FOG – namely the early crusader set.

Upon opening them I thought they were standard Old Glory, pretty good without being spectacular – except one thing stood out to me – the Crusaders on horse back looked tiny! The foot soldiers looked the right kind of size, but the horse mounted ones looked quite small.

Here one suggestion. Lots of pictures, too.

Thanks – I am not familiar with minifigs – are they good quality castings and a fair size?

Minifigs have been around since 1967. The link is for their third generation of 15mm for the subject.

I am biased as GFI makes them for the North American market, so of course, I am going to endorse them. 8>) "I" think their quality is supurb!

Now with my gaming hat on, I find them awesome to paint and historically accurate.

Good luck with your project regardless of whomever's figure you choose. We will probably be able to fill in the holes for you, anyway as this particular range is huge!

Legio Heroica are simply the best, with personalities too

It depends which Crusade you want to do. This is a 200 year period with changes in armour and dress.

Minifigs do seem to cover most of the varieties. Essex do much of it, but I'm not convinced of the accuracy.
For other ranges I would suggest:

1st Crusade – Normans from various ranges would fit although Southern French and Sicilian contingents would probably have had a bit more variety in helmet style and lower limb armour became more common. OG15s do Sicilian Normans which would add a bit of variety to their Normans.
Outpost produce specific 1st Crusade figures as does Alain Touller. I wonder if Khurasan can be persuaded to add some Phrygian helmeted types to his Normans. It's not like he's busy :)
2nd Crusade – Alain Touller.

3rd Crusade and the battles just before – Legio Heroica, Alain Touller, Black Hat's Feudals.

5th and 6th Crusades (and probably La Forbie) Legio Heroica's Feudal Range, Black Hat's Feudals, Mirliton (probably just 6th Crusade)

7th Crusade – Legio Heroica, Black Hat's Feudals, Mirliton

From what I've seen of OGs Crusade range they are really most suitable for mid to late 13th century, which isn't the heyday of Crusading.

Wow – thanks guys so much, some really good advice here.

I bought the Oold Glory early crusader box which is first crusade type (so very norman) however the period I am very interested in is later (so I can run the orders of templar, st john, hostpitaller etc) AND the other one I really want to do is the Albigensian Crusade.

I would really appreciate advice around this?

By the way – the reason I bought the OG box is that it is packaged as a 600 point list for FOG – and I havent bought the rules or books yet so this seemed the easiest way to get started.

Another vote for Legio Heroica – a bit more expensive, but well worth it! Mirliton for the later crusades.

Albigensian Crusade – Legio Heroica early 13th century figures.

If you want to include the Spanish then Alain Touller's paint up very nicely. I think the shields are more appropriate for a generation later though. Touller's ginetes are better for a later period so Essex's unarmoured ones would be better.

You could use the same figures for the Albigensian Crusade and the 5th/6th Crusades if you aren't fussy about the heraldry (and I'm sure some were in both areas anyway). See earlyblazon.com for suggestions.
You also have the option of the Romanian Franks – those who settled in what they had conquered when they took Constantinople.

I haven't seen them 'in the lead', but they looked quite good when Khurasan posted the release pictures a few months ago on the news pages.

worth a look at the least.

I understand that the crossbows and peasants who are needed for the First Crusade are going to be released in a few weeks.

Good breakdown of suitable figures across the Crusade period Swampster.

Yes, if it's First Crusade, I'd suggest that our Franks are suitable, especially as the Crossbowmen are coming quite soon. (The painter has them, just waiting for the painted pics!)

Must admit I will be getting Legio Heroica when Extra Impetus 2 comes out (at the same time I buy the Impetus rules). To me they look REALLY nice figures. Some of the nicest 15mm I've seen for a while, but I do like the Crusades :-)

Empgamer06 Mar 2010 6:02 a.m. PST

Time to order the LH Crusaders. Not cheap at current exchange rate. Covering most of options for FOG/Impetus is going to be about € 200!!! Eeeeeeek!! Who said 15mm was cheap.

Great figures LH but nearly twice price of many others.

CptKremmen06 Mar 2010 6:24 a.m. PST

I have recently bought a lot of crusader figures from museum miniatures in the UK and Legio Heroica in Italy.

I must say I am VERY impressed with both suppliers.

MM had a sale a few weeks ago.

LH have one that does not finish until 10th March

CptKremmen08 Mar 2010 6:26 a.m. PST

But Legio Heroica are the better of the two :)

Albus Malum24 Feb 2019 2:14 p.m. PST

This is a old post, but I just started painting some Museum Miniatures (crusaders) and I have to say, I like them a lot, Nice scuplts, the horses look good. But be sure to carefully inspect your mini's as some of them will have a little flashing and cleanup to do on them. I dont own any LH mini's but the pictures of the horses Ive seen are a little off… Soldiers look nice.
