Has anyone attempted to game this disaster?

What game system would you use? (FoG? WAB?)

Would you represent a single day or all of them?
One section of the line of march or the whole thing?

What would the Romans be gaming for (objectives?)

What about small scale skirmish games where individual soldiers accomplish things?

Discuss :)

An individual skirmish might involve groups of legionaries or auxiliaries trying to cut their way out through the forest. The Germans can appear from random direction in random-sized groups.

The key for the Romans will be to try and fight and win quickly. The longer each fight is prolonged the more Germans will show up-attracted by noise and so on.

Maybe make the Roman player roll morale if they abandon wounded. The Germans of course might stop for a moment to take heads, loot bodies, and so on

Maybe randomize the terrain to portray a running fight in unfamiliar ground.

I've never even heard of "it"! (is this something known by a more familiar term?) My only self consoling tactic is to remember that Roman stuff is not my first period of interest….

Doug,

Sorry all

Varus & his three Roman legions destroyed by Hermann (or Arminius) and the Germans in A.D. 9

I got a little carried away with the title.

I think it would be fun to run it as a mini-campaign. Strat out with Varus receiving the news of trouble in the rear. As the legions move through the Black Forest they run into a number of small skirmish and light actions hitting them from all sides and all locations. They receive information from locals that may or may not indicate where the "threat" is then the big action and slaughter at the Teutoburg.

Hi

30 years ago in denver, one of the locals tried to "surprise" me with this. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing!
