I want to use about 40 to 50 Gamezone/Reaper Knights and men-at-arms and pit them against an adversary (of equal strength) of some type. What would you recommend (1st) as an adversary and (2nd)what type of Fantasy Rules (Skirmish I guess) would work well.

Very Cute. This was a serious question. Anyways, any recommends for rules, never played before.

Brummie Lad05 Jul 2009 3:57 a.m. PST

Seriously:
Dragons are a good suggestion.
Warg/other alternative beast riders would work well

As regards to rules, I don't really play fantasy skirmish games, but HOTT are a pretty decent rules set.

Ok, how about Songs Of Blades & Heroes since no one has mentioned it yet…very good, just do some searches on TMP to find out all about it.

As to opponents…Ogres and Trolls oh my!

Ogres, Dragons, Black Knights, Wargs, Goblins, Skeletons.

I've heard that GW's Lord of the Rings skirmish game is pretty good.

Our Warrior Heroes Armies and Adventures is quite popular around here. Fit for skirmishes up to about 1 figure = 50 combatants. There are modified rules for each scale as well as campaign generators and a dungeon generator all solo/same side friendly, with NPC's controlled by the game system.

A more or less light version CR3 Swordplay is available as a free download at twohourwargames.com

Song of Blades & Heroes is a great fantasy skirmish system but it doesn't really work with the number of figures you want to use. The problem is, skirmish games generally work better with less figures (say 10 to 20 per side) and mass battle games need more figures. The number of figures you want to use is in between.
HOTT would work but you'd need to base them on element bases (2/3 mounted knights or 3/4 foot soldiers to a 60mm frontage base). A HOTT army is around 12 bases so you'd have the correct number of figures.

…yet a perfectly acceptable size for the full battle rules in Warrior Heroes Armies and Adventures : )

Mooseworks806 Jul 2009 1:30 p.m. PST

AD&D Battlesystem or Mighty Armies for the rules.

Opponents:
Dwarves with lots of guns.
High Elf army that is bow heavy.
Undead.
Evil Knights.
Dragons.

I hear that WARMACHINE makes small scale battle boxes. Are they designed for Skirmish? How many figs do they contain?

Lion in the Stars09 Aug 2009 2:55 p.m. PST

To answer the add-on question, WARMACHINE starter boxes are one infantry model (the General/'Warcaster') and 2-4 big stompy robots. Warmachine is a great skirmish game, but bogs under the weight of the skirmish detail at about 30 minis per side.

Pawns, rooks and bishops?

That's actually a very cool idea…

1905Adventure10 Aug 2009 8:07 a.m. PST

Another thing about WM is that it is very much a system mastery type of game. While general tactical ability is good, what really distinguishes opponents is their handle of the game rules and the individual warcaster/solo/warmachine/unit special rules and how they all work and synergize together. This isn't a bad thing, but a heads up is in order.

Since you like Gamezone and Reaper, I'm going to suggest undead.
